Eagles and Wild Horses With him I saw the wild horses run; I saw eagles in his eyes. I saw the tawny plains glistening in the sun; I saw the sapphire skies. I saw the colors of the wild world; I saw the world anew. I saw the moonlight as it is, damp and pearled; I saw the sky as blue. I saw the wild horses dance on the grass, Tossing their wild manes. I saw the trails left where their hooves pass, Free upon the plains. I saw the eagles soaring across the clouds, The earth beneath their wings. I dreamed that we might be as high and proud, As free of earthly things. I dreamed- and the dream faded and failed. But never will I forget The sapphire skies in which eagles sailed, The memories that live yet Between us, and in my memory of his gaze. There were wild horses there, There, running in the love of my younger days, And eagles in the air.
