IAN THOMAS - "MOTHER EARTH"
Topic: New Chords Postings

Long Long Way was the 1974 follow-up to Ian Thomas's self-titled debut album. It produced two successful singles, in the title track and "Mother Earth". It also gave the 1974 Most Promising Male Vocalist Juno award winner his second consecutive gold album. Thomas showed he was well on his way to becoming the hit-making machine he would be known as in Canada.

"Mother Earth" is actually a tale of two tunes. On the album, the song has a rootsy, folk-rock sound. The foundation of the track is a strummed acoustic guitar, enhanced by piano and keyboard parts, with a single vocal track by Thomas. By the time the song was released as the album's second single toward the end of 1974, it had undergone a total make-over, having been entirely re-arranged and re-recorded. The acoustic guitar had given way to a more fully keyboard driven sound, and backing vocals had been added. Overall, it was a slicker, more ear-catching arrangement, perhaps for the purpose of helping the song to stand out in the AM radio crowd. The single peaked at #41 on the RPM 100.

As far as I know, the only album the single version has ever appeared on is the 1980 greatest hits compilation The Best Of Ian Thomas. In 1993, when Thomas released another comprehensive best-of compilation (called Looking Back), "Mother Earth" wasn't included on it.

This chord chart can be used for either version of the song. The main chord chart is of the single version, because I think that's probably the version more people are familiar with. At the end of the chord chart I've included the added parts for playing the LP version.

SPOONS - "NOVA HEART"
Topic: New Tab Postings

"Nova Heart" was the first single drawn from Arias & Symphonies (1982), the second album from Burlington, Ontario new wave band the Spoons. Released in April of 1982, the song became a Top 40 hit in Canada. It was followed by two more singles, the album's title track and "Smiling In Winter". The success of all three singles propelled Arias & Symphonies to gold status.

Singer/guitarist Gordon Deppe has described "Nova Heart" as being "a spiritual take on the end of childhood."1 In describing the album, he commented, "We think our appeal lies in keeping the music simple, while the lyrics ask you to explore remote places and uncommon ideas...That idea runs through the whole album."2

You can see a good live version of the song hereThe video is from 2007, and has the band looking and sounding a bit more 'rock-ish' than in their new wave/new romantic days. (That video had embedding disabled, though, so I couldn't include it here in this post.)

The tab is of the album version of the song, not the single edit. The album version is linked to below.

THE PRETENDERS
Topic: Riff-In-A-Jiff

Recorded in July of 1982, not long after the death of lead guitarist James Honeyman-Scott and the firing of bassist Pete Farndon, "Back On the Chain Gang" would become one of the Pretenders' most successful singles. The song was recorded by an interim line-up; Rockpile guitarist Billy Bremner and Big Country bassist Tony Butler joined Chrissie Hynde and Martin Chambers for the session.

The single was released in the Fall of 1982, and became a Top 5 hit in both the US and Canada, while charting at #17 at home in the UK.

The song was included on the band's next full album, Learning To Crawl, released early in 1984. Bremner and Butler played on a couple of other tracks, as well, but the bulk of the album was recorded by the band's new permanent line-up, which had Robbie McIntosh on guitar and Malcolm Foster on bass. The album went platinum and reached the Top 5 on Billboard.

Tabbed here is the Intro.

MAX WEBSTER - "IN CONTEXT OF THE MOON"
Topic: New Tab Postings

"In Context Of the Moon", the closing track on Max Webster's High Class In Borrowed Shoes (1977) album, was the second in a series of moon-themed songs, one of which appeared on each of the first four Max Webster studio albums. It was preceded by "Coming Off the Moon", from the band's 1976 self-titled debut album. "Beyond the Moon" was featured on 1978's Mutiny Up My Sleeve, while "Moon Voices" -- the last of the series -- appeared on the 1979 album A Million Vacations

"In Context" was also featured on the band's 1980 live album Live Magnetic Air, and was the B-side of the single release of "Words To Words". The musically eclectic tune - ranging from hard rock to jazz and back again -- has long been regarded as a Max classic.

You can see a video of Max Webster playing the song live
here, but the version I've chosen to embed below is the video I referred to a lot while doing the tab. It's a live version of Kim Mitchell playing the song with his own band (very faithful to the Max version, with the exception of some guitar solo bits), and in several spots it gives a good, clear look at the guitar playing.

LIGHTHOUSE - "SUNNY DAYS"
Topic: New Chords Postings

A mainstay of 1970's Top 40 radio (and later classic rock radio), the single "Sunny Days" has been referred to by one website (CanadianBands.com) as "Canada's summer anthem". The song went Top 40 on Billboard, and reached #4 on Canada's RPM Singles chart. The album the single came from was certified Gold, and the success of that album won Lighthouse a Juno Award for Best Group Of the Year.

The band has also gotten a lot of mileage out of the song for use as an album title. It was the title track of the album it first appeared on, 1972's Sunny Days. In 1989, the band released a greatest hits compilation entitled The Best Of Lighthouse: Sunny Days Again. And most recently, in 2009, the song was tapped once more for the title of the Lighthouse best-of CD/DVD set 40 Years Of Sunny Days. This serves as a testament to the ongoing popularity of this summer feel-good pop classic.

THE TEA PARTY
Topic: Riff-In-A-Jiff

The tag line on the home page of The Tea Party's official website proclaims: "No politics...Just Rock and Roll." I guess that reflects the state of affairs for the long-established band (broken up, but currently reunited), who have in recent years found themselves sharing a name with a somewhat controversial U.S. political party. Perhaps a lot of ultra right wing political types have mistakenly surfed into their site expecting Sarah Palin, but getting sitars, tablas, and overdriven Les Pauls instead?

The song "The Bazaar" comes from the band's third album, The Edges Of Twilight (1995), and is also included on their greatest hits CD Tangents: The Tea Party Collection (2000). It contains both defining elements that the band is most noted for: their world music (particularly Indian and Eastern) influenced sound and their use of alternate tunings. "The Bazaar" is played in Open G5 tuning (all strings tuned to either G or D). Tabbed here is the guitar riff from the Intro. To play just the riff, you can simply tune the A string down to G (rather than doing a full retuning), since the whole riff is played on one string. Or you can even play it in Standard tuning, but it will be in a different key from the recording, of course.
