CHILLIWACK - "THERE'S SOMETHING I LIKE ABOUT THAT"
Topic: New Chords Postings

"There's Something I Like About That" was the second of three singles taken from Chilliwack's fourth album, Riding High (1974). (The other singles were "Crazy Talk" and "Come On Over".) While the song didn't enjoy the Top 10 success that "Crazy Talk" did, it broke into the Top 100, reaching #85 in Canada.

The album was primarily produced by Mike Flicker, but "Something I Like" was produced by Terry Jacks, of "Seasons In the Sun" fame, and Riding High was released on Jacks' label Goldfish Records.

While "There's Something I Like About That" has come to be considered one of Chilliwack's early classics, the song isn't included on either of the band's Greatest Hits records. It does, however, appear on the 2003 CD There and Back - Live, which is essentially a live Greatest Hits album.

BACK TO "HOLLYWOOD"
Topic: Website

I never was entirely happy with the way I tabbed the main riff in the tab I did of Streetheart's "Hollywood". Specifically, that would be the third staff of the Intro (and all of its repetitions throughout the song). Parts of the fingering for the riff seemed awkward. So I was fiddling around with it last night, and came up with a better fingering. I didn't actually change that much. All the notes are exactly the same, I've just moved a few to different locations. It shifts the overall position on the fretboard just a bit (making it more comfortable). I still don't know exactly how Streetheart plays it, but I think the minor changes I've made make the fingering fall a bit more naturally on the fretboard.

LEE AARON - "ONLY HUMAN"
Topic: New Tab Postings

Lee Aaron's 1987 self-titled album marked a change in direction for her, a departure from her heavy metal roots to a more pop-rock, radio friendly sound. The first single from the album -- the power ballad "Only Human" -- became one of her most successful singles.

As it turned out, this entire tab hinged on one individual note. When I first started working on it, I immediately thought the song was played in an alternate tuning. I wasn't positive, though, so it was off to view the video to see if I could find out from that. At first, it didn't seem to be much help, since so little of the guitar playing is shown. But I was able to focus in on one small thing. The video clearly shows that the last note of the opening phrase of the guitar solo is played on the eighth fret of the A string. The only way that note could be played in that spot is if the guitar was tuned down a half step. Case solved, alternate tuning confirmed. (And I was also reasonably convinced that that was correct due to the fact that other well-known Lee Aaron songs are played in Eb tuning.) The rest of the tab followed from that one note. Smile

I also tried something for the first time with this tab. Re-tuning to Eb can be a bit of a hassle, so instead I imported the song into Audacity and raised the pitch by a semi-tone. Brought the song to my guitar's tuning instead of the other way around. It worked out great, saving me a lot of re-tuning time.

DOUCETTE
Topic: Riff-In-A-Jiff

Jerry Doucette's debut album Mama Let Him Play (1977) was an unqualified succes, quickly reaching platinum status in Canada. Interest was generated outside of Canada as he toured behind the album, opening for acts such as Eddie Money, Meatloaf, and Bob Welch. Singles from the disc included the title track, "All I Wanna Do", and the song whose Intro is tabbed here, "Down the Road", the album's opening track.

The video below of Doucette playing the song was helpful in getting the opening rhythm part of the Intro down. The tab is of the studio version of the song (linked to below), so the lead part is tabbed differently from the way it's played in the video. On the studio version, I'm pretty sure it's separate guitars playing the harmonized lead lines.

CHRIS DE BURGH - "A SPACEMAN CAME TRAVELLING"
Topic: New Chords Postings

In keeping with the Christmas theme, "A Spaceman Came Travelling" is a re-telling of the Christmas story with a sci-fi twist. The song is from Chris de Burgh's second album, Spanish Train And Other Stories (1975). It's had good success, particularly in the UK and Ireland, where it's been released as a single multiple times, reaching the Top 40 in its 1986 release.

I've seen Chris de Burgh in concert twice, at Hamilton Place (theatre) in Hamilton and at Maple Leaf Gardens (arena) in Toronto. The Hamilton Place show was set up to be filmed for TV, and when I went looking for a video of this song on YouTube, I was surprised to find footage from that very April 1983 show. It appears below.

Video shows that de Burgh plays this song various different ways. It's in the key of D minor, and in the video below he plays it with his guitar capoed at the fifth fret, with the chords transposed to the key of A minor. In more recent video, he plays it without a capo on the guitar (and playing it in D minor, of course). Here's an example of that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SowmY4C_naQ  I've transcribed it the second way, to be played without a capo. It's really the same key either way, just two different ways of playing it.
