ROCKIN' IN SASKATCHEWAN
Topic: Guitar

And not just because of a berth in this Sunday's Grey Cup Game...although there is that, too. In the course of working on this site, I often hear from other guitarists who have happened onto the site, then e-mailed me with comments about it. In some cases, those people will have online projects of their own, such as a guitar website, a MySpace band promo page, audio recordings, or videos.

One such guitarist -- from Saskatchewan -- goes by the screen name of "lickenitup" at YouTube, where he posts guitar demonstration videos, playing along to recordings of songs. Some of the bands he's covered include April Wine ("I Like To Rock", "Sign Of the Gypsy Queen"), Headpins ("People"), and Triumph ("Petite Etude", "Midsummer's Daydream"), as well as selections by Def Leppard, Van Halen, and Iron Maiden, among others.

If you look down the page listing of his videos, you'll notice how highly rated they are, fours and fives across the board...mostly fives (rated out of 5). He's a very talented guitarist, as you'll see if you look at some of his postings. These videos offer an excellent demonstration for anyone trying to learn how to play any of these songs, so I wanted to recommend them to site visitors here. And the Canadian content he covers made recommending them here a natural, since many people come to this site specifically for tabs of Canadian performers. His video of "Petite Etude" is a particular favourite for me.

His most recent posting (just a couple of days ago) is a cover of Saga's "On the Loose". I had a go at this song once myself, posting a tab of it at UltimateGuitar.com and here on this site. At UG, the tab garnered enough comments about all of the errors in it that I finally (recently) just added a note at the top of the tab (on both sites) advising people not to use it. Lickenitup's YouTube vid will show you how to play it right.

You can see the full selection of his guitar demo videos here:

This is his video of April Wine's "Roller":

LYNYRD SKYNYRD - "SWAMP MUSIC"
Topic: New Tab Postings

Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Swamp Music" appeared on the band's second album Second Helping (1974, pictured). This double-platiunum selling album is most noted for featuring the band's biggest hit, "Sweet Home Alabama". The album peaked at #12 on Billboard. "Swamp Music" has also been featured on many Skynyrd compilation/greatest hits albums, such as Skynyrd's Innyrds (1989), What's Your Name (1997), and The Essential Lynyrd Skynyrd (1998).

Second Helping was the first of their albums to feature the three guitar attack that became a signature of the band's sound. In various parts of "Swamp Music" you can hear three guitar parts being played at the same time. I've kept the tab to two guitar parts, though, for the sake of clarity. (Sometimes just trying to follow a double-staffed part is confusing enough without getting into triple-staffing.) And even with two guitar parts it makes for a long tab. There's plenty going on in this song, so the biggest challenge was trying to separate the guitar parts, and figure out what each one was playing.

BLUE RODEO - "LOST TOGETHER"
Topic: New Chords Postings

The title song of Blue Rodeo's 1992 album Lost Together was also the album's most successful single. Both single and album peaked at #3 on the Canadian charts, with the album achieving double-platinum status. It also marked the first time the band chose to produce itself.

Having recently become the fifth band to be honoured with a star on Canada's Walk Of Fame (in September of this year), Blue Rodeo's next big event will be playing the halftime show at this year's Grey Cup game in Calgary on November 29th. Connected to this is a promotion inviting people to vote for the songs the band will play in their three song set. http://www.greycuphalftimeshow.ca/

From the list given, my picks would be "Trust Yourself", "Heart Like Mine", and "Diamond Mine". Those aren't necessarily my three favourites from that list. They're the three I think would work best for a halftime show at a championship football game, where they'll be wanting to keep the crowd fired up and involved (and moving, since they'll all probably be freezing cold Laughing). For that setting, I'd opt for upbeat or harder rocking songs.

But for today, an excellent ballad.

TROOPER - "THE BOYS IN THE BRIGHT WHITE SPORTS CAR"
Topic: New Tab Postings

About two years ago, I tabbed the opening verse of "The Boys In the Bright White Sports Car" (a song which has to set some kind of record for longest song title) for the Riffs section of the site. Now comes the tab for the full song.

"Boys" originally appeared on Trooper's second album, Two For the Show, in 1976. But it wasn't released as a single until it appeared on Hot Shots (pictured), the band's 1979 Greatest Hits album. The song became one of Trooper's most successful singles, reaching #25 on the Canadian RPM chart, and helping propel Hot Shots to quadruple platinum sales in Canada.

The only significant tab note is that the song is in a slightly unusual key, Bb minor. But a check of some video footage confirmed that that is the correct key.

CHILLIWACK
Topic: Riff-In-A-Jiff

In 1978, Chilliwack released their seventh album, Lights From the Valley (pictured), the follow-up to their successful Dreams Dreams Dreams album. Despite a lack of promotion due to financial troubles at Mushroom Records, the album yielded a hit in the band's cover version of "Arms Of Mary".

The album was also Chilliwack's first since the addition of guitarist Brian MacLeod, and it would be the line-up established on this record that would give the band its most successful years.

HONEYMOON SUITE - "NEW GIRL NOW"
Topic: New Tab Postings

In the mid-1980's, the song "New Girl Now" helped Honeymoon Suite to win Toronto radio station Q107's "Homegrown" contest for unsigned artists. Shortly afterward, the band signed with WEA Records.

Their 1984 self-titled debut album (pictured) spawned four hit singles, with "Stay In the Light", "Burning In Love", and "Wave Babies" following "New Girl Now" onto the Canadian charts. "New Girl Now" rose to #23 on the charts (#57 in the US), while the album peaked at #38.

"New Girl Now" also benefitted from being released in the same year that Canadian cable music channel MuchMusic first started broadcasting (in August). "Much" gave the video heavy airplay, as I'm sure lots of you will remember. Wink
