Topic: New Tab Postings
The Runaways are certainly topical these days, what with the feature film about their career that's currently in theatres. The film originally had a working title of Neon Angels: The Runaways. I guess that was abandoned somewhere along the line, since the final title seems to be simply The Runaways. That working title came from the fact that the movie is based on lead singer Cherie Currie's 1989 autobiography Neon Angel: The Cherie Currie Story. And, in turn, the title of Currie's book comes from "Neon Angels On the Road To Ruin", a song on the band's second album, Queens Of Noise (1977). While some don't care for the high gloss production of this album, I think it's easily their best album in terms of material. On an album of strong tracks, "Neon Angels" stands out as one of the best, with its catchy, memorable riff, good melody, and strong vocal phrasing. The band even tinkers with some timing complexity here by starting out in 4/4 time, kicking into 12/8 for the bulk of the song, then returning to 4/4 for the end. Large parts of the solo also have 4/4 being played against the 12/8 rhythm. Speaking of which, Lita Ford unleashes a flashy solo here which showcases her already considerable guitar skills. This album was the band at its strongest. By the time of their next studio album, both Currie and bassist Jackie Fox had departed, and the band's sound lacked the dimension and diversity of the original recording line-up.
