TOM COCHRANE - "LIFE IS A HIGHWAY"
Topic: New Chords Postings

Mad Mad World (1991) was Tom Cochrane's first solo album after his departure from Red Rider. From that album came his most successful single, "Life Is A Highway". The single gave him a runaway #1 hit in Canada, reached #6 on the US Hot 100, and was successful worldwide. The album achieved rare 'diamond' status in Canada, for sales of over one million, and it also sold two million internationally. All of this netted Cochrane four Juno Awards in 1992, for Album Of the Year, Songwriter Of the Year, Male Vocalist Of the Year, and Song Of the Year for "Life Is A Highway". Added to this were three other awards from songwriters'/publishers' associations (SOCAN and ASCAP).

While Cochrane recorded "Life Is A Highway" as a roots rock song, it has since proved popular with country music artists. In 1999, Chris Ledoux took his cover of the song to #64 on the US Country chart. More recently, in 2006, Rascal Flatts covered the song for the movie "Cars", scoring a hit on both the pop and country charts, reaching #7 on the Billboard Hot 100. In February of 2007, Cochrane joined the band onstage at Rexall Place in Edmonton for a performance of the song.

Hi Rick,

...and the next posting is by your suggestion. So you're on a roll! Smile

A day or so ago, I was looking at the song listing on the Tom Cochrane album Trapeze. It has all his greatest hits from both Red Rider and his solo career. It looks excellent, I have to pick that up. I actually had it in my hand in a Sunrise one day months back, but didn't buy it because I'd seen it cheaper on Amazon. I should have gotten it, though, because I never did get around to ordering it through Amazon. Undecided

There was one chord in the "Life Is A Highway" chord chart that I couldn't decide on. Kind of significant, too, since it's in that main progression that's repeated a zillion times. So I just added a note at the bottom a few minutes ago which reads (save you the trouble of looking):

"Re: the 6th chord in the Intro (second chord of Bar 2). I have this as a C major chord. The bass plays an A note there, but a full A minor chord didn't sound right to me. It sounded like the keyboard was playing C Major, so I went with that. If the C doesn't sound right to you, though, you could try an Am there."

I guess I cover a couple of bases that way. It's C...or Am...maybe. Tongue out If you have an opinion on which it is, let me know.

But I guess that's no worse than Kim Mitchell on that video lesson, saying, "I start with an A chord, except actually it's a D. The notes are A, E...no, A, D...no, A, F#..." Laughing
