BOB SEGER & THE SILVER BULLET BAND
Topic: Riff-In-A-Jiff

Bob Seger's "Mainstreet" features a simple, but very melodic and memorable guitar Intro. The song is from Seger's first Top 10 album Night Moves (1976), and it reached #24 on the pop charts. The melody also transfers well to other instruments. In Seger's live show, this Intro is often played to great effect on saxophone (sometimes tenor sax, sometimes soprano sax). The song recounts his days in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Great riff as usual Anne

But I play it in D instead of Eb

Just my preference

And by the way great Harlequin tune to

Keep up all the good work

Hi Rick,

You know, originally that post was longer. I had the part tabbed out in D and in Eb, and I was going to post both. But then I decided that most guitarists know how to transpose it themselves, if they want to.

I think Seger plays it in D when he does it live. I looked at lots of live footage, and didn't see any with a capo on the guitar. In one or two, the footage was close enough and clear enough that you could tell he's playing in D. (The bit about the capo, I read on a guitar site, so I just added that in.) I compared live versions to the studio version, and they do sound like they're in a different key, the studio version is a bit higher. So I think he just foregoes the capo, and plays it in D when doing it live. Just my guess, though. ;-)
