"TONITE"
Topic: New Tab Postings

Posted today -- by request -- is a tab of "Tonite" by April Wine. The song is from the band's 1979 album Harder...Faster. It was considered their hardest rocking album up to that point, but "Tonite" shows both sides of April Wine. It's a melodic ballad wrapped around a full throttle rock out middle section. The song has been added to the video page. (No actual video, but someone posted the song at YouTube.)

The 16 bar guitar solo during that middle section isn't tabbed here. While it doesn't sound all that difficult, there was too much of it that I couldn't get, for various reasons. There's some kind of little timing hiccup right at the beginning that throws me off. There are some parts that are too fast to hear what's being played. And there are some parts that I can't hear clearly enough what's being played. Rather than put in a patchwork solo, I just left it out, and tabbed the rhythm guitar part for that part of the song. I don't like leaving parts out, but it seemed the best route to go this time. (Fortunately, I know this won't happen next time out because I already have the guitar solo for the next tab done. Smile) All other lead/solo parts are included in the tab.

Hi Rick,

Hope you enjoy that one. It's a great song, isn't it?

I think you might be interested in the next tab, too. Remember way back when I said to you, 'more Harlequin in the new year'? Well, it took awhile, but... Smile

has anyone noticed how, in the original 1979 album or cassettes at the time contained the the "full" version of this song?  in the middle of the song, originally, there are a series of fast, and quick solos.  i don't remember the exact order but if i remember correctly it was both guitars trading off, then the bass guitar, followed lastly by the drums.  skip to the present, and if you were to go and buy this on CD?  the song is NOT the same.  the bass solo is removed.  does anyone know why this is?  or knows what i'm talking about?

 thanks for reading.

Hi Lew,

I checked into this a little bit, and yes, I see exactly what you're saying. Fortunately, it seems I did my tab from the full version of the song. I was given a couple of April Wine songs and asked if I could get around to having a look at them. The version of "Tonite" I was given was from the anthology CD The April Wine Collection. After reading your comment, I looked into what version of the song you got if you bought it from an mp3 site off of Harder...Faster. And you're absolutely right, the version now being sold on "HF" is an edited version.

For anyone wondering about the changes, have a look at the tab here: https://www.angelfire.com/planet/zerofret/cantab/aprilwine-tonite.txt. Go down to the measure that says "free time begins" under the staff (half way through the Bridge). The version of the song on current editions of Harder...Faster include this measure, and the next two, but then it edits out the next four bars (including the bass lick that was referred to) and goes right to the bar with the drum fill that leads into the main guitar solo. So a whole section has been cut out of that free time, trading licks part. I'm assuming the original vinyl release of H...F had the full,  longer version of the song. From what you're saying, Lew, that seems to be the case.

It's weird, because usually the exact opposite is done. Usually, edited versions of songs often appear on anthologies to make room for more songs. In this case it's the reverse. If someone wanted the full version of "Tonite", they'd be better off buying The April Wine Collection (http://www.aprilwine.ca/April%20Wine%20-%20Discography%20-%20The%20April%20Wine%20Collection.htm) than they would be buying Harder...Faster, the album on which it originally appeared. The person who posted the song at YouTube (which I added to the Video Page of the site) posted the version from The Collection, so it's the full song. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHA0P5gcjH0)

What's troubling about this is that it means if you buy Harder...Faster on CD or mp3 now, you're not actually getting the "real thing", the original recording of the album. Why would they tamper with the content of the album? No idea. I'm sure there's no problem fitting it on a CD. Albums weren't overly long back then.

Interesting point, Lew, thanks for mentioning it. Smile I'm often suspicious of anthology CDs because of that tendency to edit songs. Now it looks like I'm going to have to be suspicious of the CD versions of all my old vinyl, wondering if I'm going to get the whole original album if I re-buy it on CD.

well....

anne?  thank you for looking into this.  i know now that this track has been edited, and i'm not the only person who is aware of this.  and yes, now the question is why was this done?  what was the purpose of it?  i liked the song the way it was originally released.  each time i hear this "new" version?  it just doesn't do it for me.  for those of you who are blissfully ignorant?  don't go in search of the original, just be happy where you are.   anne?  i wonder if attempting to contact the artist (myles goodwyn?) would shed any light on this.
