THE EAGLES
Topic: Riff-In-A-Jiff

This song doesn't need much introduction; it's one of the best known guitar Intros around (Joe Walsh plays lead on the song). So I'll just go with a Don Henley quote about how he personally related to the song's subject matter.

"I could hardly listen to ["Life In the Fast Lane"] when we were recording it because I was getting high a lot at the time, and the song made me ill. We were trying to paint a picture that cocaine wasn't that great. It turns on you. It messed up my back muscles, it messed up my nerves, it messed up my stomach, and made me paranoid."

-Don Henley, quoted in To The Limit: The Untold Story Of The Eagles by Marc Eliot.

Hi, Rick! How're you doing? Had a good holiday weekend, I hope?

Yeah, you gotta love Joe. I've done a tab of him with the James Gang, a riff of his with the Eagles. Now if I just do something from his solo career, I should have it covered, eh? Smile

Yeah, it was definitely on the chilly side, wasn't it?

I don't know where all the heat went...maybe it's gone "Rocky Mountain Way". Laughing

I think they're predicting it's supposed to warm up again pretty fast, though.

(Still laughing at that cat and dog video. Smile)

I have to admit that I've sort of come to dislike the Eagles (and that recent "Wal-Mart Only" record release didn't help much).  Although I did see Don Henley once, but the opening act was Edie Brickell.  Nevertheless, how can anyone not love Joe Walsh?  I even saw him as a judge once on the Miss USA pageant.  Or something like that.  Now that's cool.  But the best Eagles song is "In the City," and surprise! it's a Joe song (at least, he co-wrote it).  So get to work on that one Anne, and I might have to dust off my little Marshall practice amp that's been alone in the closet for quite some time now.

And you're right, there is an abundance of Rush tab out there, and an abundance of it is not so good.  But a lot of Rush stuff is not as hard as it might seem.   And I did know that they played on Universal Juveniles, I have a copy of the LP.  And finally, I once had this Battlestar Galactica playset thing; it was made of cardboard, and I'm pretty sure I sent away for it from cereal.  It was made to be like the cockpit of one of the fighter spaceships in the original show.  I also had a model of those ships, and a Cylon warrior ship, too.  But I got older and blew them up with fireworks one Fourth of July.  Cool!

Now, how about some mandolin tab?

Did the Eagles do one of those exclusive one-store-only things? I didn't know that. Yeah, that kind of thing annoys me a bit. I remember a few years back when the Stones did that with their Forty Licks CD (and the DVD, what was it called? Forty Flicks, I think?). And they did one of those exclusivity deals, too. I don't know about elsewhere, but here in Canada you could only get it at Future Shop or Best Buy. Other record chains got so annoyed they actually pulled all of their Stones CDs off the racks for awhile.

I've always been a bit leery about buying my music in Wal-Mart, anyhow, after reading a long time ago about how they operate. I think this is true more in the States than here in Canada, where they don't have quite as much clout. But I used to see/read news stories about how Wal-Mart had editing rights on the records they sold. If they didn't like a record cover, deemed it offensive or something, it would have to be changed before the record could be sold in their store. This is never good, of course, but some of the stuff they said had to be changed was outright ridiculous. The one example I always remember is a John Mellancamp record. I don't remember which one, but apparently on the back cover there's a picture of him with the proverbial little angel over one shoulder and little devil over the other shoulder. And Wal-Mart would only sell it if the little devil was airbrushed out. So people in the States who bought the record in Wal-Mart were getting a compromised version. And if Wal-Mart would get upset about that, imagine what they'd do with some other record sleeves which could reasonably be deemed offensive? So after hearing all about that kind of stuff, even though it wasn't happening here, I'd only buy CDs/DVDs in Wal-Mart if I couldn't find them anywhere else.

But the best Eagles song is "In the City," and surprise! it's a Joe song (at least, he co-wrote it).  So get to work on that one Anne, and I might have to dust off my little Marshall practice amp that's been alone in the closet for quite some time now.

"In the city.....oooooo...." How am I doing so far? I swear I can't remember anything after the "oooo", but I do know the song. It's on The Long Run. I'm sure it would come back to me quickly. Oh, wait. "Somewhere out on that horizon, far beyond the neon lights..." That's it, isn't it? I knew it would come to me. Smile

You've left your little Marshall abandoned, alone in a closet for quite some time? That won't do...amp neglect! Get it out right now!

And you're right, there is an abundance of Rush tab out there, and an abundance of it is not so good.

I've never really checked out a lot of it (some, though) so I guess I'm not aware of the overall quality. I am working on one, though.

But a lot of Rush stuff is not as hard as it might seem.

It's not really so much that it's terribly hard, but Rush is one of those bands that -- being a trio -- Alex Lifeson has to fill up a lot of space with the guitar, so plays a very textural style. So I just feel I'd always be second guessing myself, should I tab that as a 4 note chord, or a 5 note chord, or maybe all 6 strings? And it's really not earth shatteringly important, as long as you're basically right, but I've seen the kind of comments people leave on sites like "Ultimate Guitar". They'll freak out over the simplest thing. If someone tabs a G5 where it should be a full G Major, they'll make big pronouncements that the person doesn't know how to play guitar at all. Undecided If that's all it takes to prove yourself a non-guitar player, then I probably proved it long ago! But I've just always had a feeling that with Rush tabs people would be extra picky about perfection.

And I did know that they played on Universal Juveniles, I have a copy of the LP.

"Here we are, here we are....watching the world turn..."

And finally, I once had this Battlestar Galactica playset thing; it was made of cardboard, and I'm pretty sure I sent away for it from cereal.  It was made to be like the cockpit of one of the fighter spaceships in the original show.

Alert Vipers launched! Sent away for it from cereal...that's great. Smile

I also had a model of those ships, and a Cylon warrior ship, too.  But I got older and blew them up with fireworks one Fourth of July.  Cool!

Take that, you frakkin' toasters! Laughing

(I'm guessing that all the "frak this", "frak that", and "frak the other thing" was not part of the original show, but was only added for the new show? Even with the alteration of the word, I just can't imagine they would have gotten away with that back in the 70's.)

Now that I'm caught up with the new show, I'll have to find some episodes of the original series to compare.

Now, how about some mandolin tab?

Mandolin tab? My, we are getting demanding now, aren't we? Wink You mean real mandolin tab for, like, mandolins? Laughing On mandolin tab staff? Not do-able, unfortunately. I don't play mandolin, so couldn't tab it. But there are tabs on the site already of songs that have a lot of mandolin in them, tabbed for guitar. (FM's "Phasors On Stun", Mike Oldfield's "To France")

Ok.  I'm always a bit slow keeping up with things, but anyway...

(Joe Walsh is on the radio as we speak.)

As far as I know the most recent Eagles album, released this year or in 2007 (I don't know what it's called) was available only at Wal-Mart in the US.  And as much as I hate Wal-Mart, and as much as I'm not really an Eagles fan, I can't blame them for cashing that check.  The record sold like a billion copies.  But Wal-Mart isn't really too good for anybody, except Wal-Mart, and that's probably only short term benefit for them.  Among other things, they help drive manufacturing to China.  Those "Etch-a-Sketchs?"  Now made in China, primarily because Wal-Mart wanted Ohio Art to provide a cheaper product for their customers, and the company could no longer produce them in the US for the price Wal-Mart would accept.  There are lots of other examples, but enough about Wal-Mart, eh?

Yes, that's the song (In the City), it also appeared at the end of a wonderful film called The Warriors.  A must-see.

I have to admit that I'm not much of a guitar player, especially electrically, so that amp sits in the closet.  The bigger sin is the unplayed strat that goes with it.   But hey, at least the acoustic sees the light of day on a more regular basis.  But lately, at the encouragement of a friend (who is a real player) I've been concentrating on the mandolin.  It remains to be seen, I suppose, what kind of mandolin player I'll be (and not a very good one, I'll also suppose), but I've just about got a decent performance of "Losing My Religion" worked out.  Apparently it's hard to find much mandolin tab online that isn't bluegrass.  But just remember, inside every guitar player is a mandolin player trying to get out.  (I saw that in an ad in a guitar magazine the other day.  An ad for mandolins, of course.)

"Losing My Religion". Oh, I like that one. Good song!

You know, in a way, it's surprising that I didn't pick up mandolin along the way. One of my biggest guitar heroes growing up was Nancy Wilson, and she and Roger Fisher played all kinds of mandolin on Heart's earlier records (because they, in turn, were so influenced by the Zep mandolin stuff, "Battle Of Evermore" and such).
