This cake and its frosting is a favourite sent in by Linda Rhodes, Al-USA
| 1/2 Cup butter softened |
2 Cup all purpose flour |
| 1/2 Cup shortening softened |
1 Tsp vanilla |
| 2 Cup sugar |
1 1/2 Cup chopped black walnuts |
| 5 eggs separated |
1 3oz can flaked coconut |
| 1 Cup buttermilk |
1/2 Tsp cream of tartar |
| 1 Tsp soda |

Cream butter and shortening; gradually add sugar, beating until light and fluffy and sugar dissolves. Add egg yolks beating well. Combine buttermilk and soda; stir until soda dissolves. Add flour to creamed mixture alternately with mixture, beginning and ending with flour, stir in vanilla. Add 1 1/2 cup walnuts and coconut, stirring well. Beat egg whites (at room temp) with cream of tarter until stiff peaks form. Fold egg whites into batter. Pour batter into 3 greased and floured pans. Bake at 350 for 30 min or until inserted knife comes out clean. Cool. Ice with Cream Cheese frosting. Can be frozen Cream Cheese Frosting 3/4 cup butter softened 1 8oz pkg cream cheese softened 6 3/4 cup powdered sugar 1 1/2 tsp vanilla 1/2 cups black walnuts chopped Mix together butter, cream cheese and vanilla, add sugar and beat until light and fluffy. Fold in walnuts
