Kevin is an in demand bassist and tuba player in the Central New York Region. He holds a Masters of Music in Studio Jazz Writing from the University of Miami and a Bachelors of Music in Music Education with a Performers Certificate from SUNY Potsdam and has studied jazz composition with Gary Lindsay, Ron Miller and Bret Zvacek. Dorsey has written over 100 compositions for everything from duos to symphony orchestra in many different genres. In 2004 and 2005 he has had the opportunity to perform with such diverse artists as modern jazz musicians Miguel Zenon, Dave Samuels and Steve Slagle, avant garde musicians Steve Swell, Hamid Drake, Jalil Moondrake and William Parker, opera singer N'Kenge Simpson-Hoffman and the Israeli ensemble Simply Tsfat. Kevin teaches General Music K-5 and the Guitar Ensemble at the Seymour Magnet School for International Humanities in Syracuse, NY and is on the faculty at LeMoyne College and Cayuga Community College. He is a voting member of The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (the Grammys). Kevin is the Artistic Director for the Central New York Jazz Composer's Co-operative, dedicated to the performance and promotion of newly composed jazz music. Kevin’s current band, the Syracuse Area Music Award (SAMMY) winning Kevin Dorsey Collective, is a group performing all original music combining jazz harmony with world music and other genres. |
