"The Executive" found the Chekov/Seven comparison "Interesting, but not comparable" and suggested this this instead.....

RUSSIANS ABOUND

Board: A comparison -- Chekov and Seven (Lt. Cmdr. Emony Dax)

Some of the qualities that article's author used to describe Ensign Pavel Chekov are equal to Illya Kuryakin (played by David McCallum - who was interviewed for the current issue of Starlog) on the 1960s hit series The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

  •
  • BOTH actors were not Russian, yet played Russian characters.

BOTH actors appealed to female fans at the time.

BOTH actors were young enough to bring in a younger demographic audience, but the attempt was more successful for "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.". This espionage series was very popular with the college crowd. However, David McCallum was already in his early 30s when the series started production, but at least he didn't have to wear a wig!
  • Kuryakin was always a part of U.N.C.L.E., but in the earliest episodes of the 1964 to 65 season Napoleon Solo (played by Robert Vaughn) usually went on missions himself.

Chekov first appeared in the 2nd season, but did the new character improve Star Trek's ratings? Not that I'm aware of. If anything, the show's ratings certainly suffered in the 3rd and final season --- and that's why NBC cancelled it. And that last year never would have happened if it weren't for the support of tens of thousands of loyal viewers who wrote in to save the show.
