A TRIBUTE TO RICHARD CALLOWAY CARNER
JUNE 11, 1921 TO JANUARY 25, 2007

THE BROKEN CHAIN
Little did we know that day, God was going to call your name. In life, we loved you dearly; In death, we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you. You did not go alone...For part of us went with you.
The day God called you home, you left us beautiful memories...Your love is still our guide. And although we cannot see you, you are always by our side.
Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same, but GOD calls us one by one...
THE CHAIN WILL LINK AGAIN!

My Dad was truly my hero, while on this earth. He shall forever live with me, inside my heart until one day, we are joined again, never to be parted! My Dad went into the hospital on December 30th, 2006, with a chronic case of bronchitis. While in there, he developed another hospital virus, the night before coming home, which made his hospital stay last another 4 days. His total stay in the hospital was 18 days. Because the bronchitis had made him weak, Dr. Patrick advised that he should enter into Friendship Manor Nursing facility for a couple weeks, for physical therapy purposes only. However, after spending only 1 night there, he told me on Jan. 17th, 2007, to please get him out of there, because there was nothing they were doing there that he couldn't do at home. So I told him, "You've got it!" With or without doctor's permission, we were going to leave, but they wrote the order that he could leave. So on Wednesday, January 17th, 2007, Daddy came home to his home he shared with Mother, that he dearly loved.

We went for his post doctor's appt. on Monday, January 22nd, 2007, and all seemed to be going fine.

Then on January 24th, 2007, I took him for his podiatrist appointment. He was breathing heavy, but we made it for his treatment. However, on the way out, after the visit, as Dad was standing and trying to walk to the car, which was parked right outside the door, he just froze and said he didn't think he could do it. I encouraged him to walk and hold on to me and his cane. We took a few short steps and he stopped again. I continued encouraging him to walk just a couple more steps, to the car. When we got to the curb, I stepped down and told him to step down...that I would help him. When he stepped down, he collasped onto my left shoulder and slid down the side of my car, as I eased him gently down to the pavement. He really went to be with Jesus at that moment.

However, I ran back inside and told the receptionist to call 911 for the ambulance...that my Dad had fallen. She did and his podiatrist and his nurse came outside and began giving Dad CPR. Another doctor and his nurse just happened to be driving by, and saw what was happening and stopped to help too. The ambulance finally got there after about 15 minutes. But the 2 doctors and the 2 nurses couldn't get a pulse going. However, when the ambulance got there, they continued the CPR and I rode with Dad in the ambulance to the hospital. He was put on life support over night, but even with the help of the medicine which made his blood pressure come back up, that also made his heart rate hit over 200. The doctors and nurses at the hospital did a CODE BLUE on him that morning, and Mother and I got to the hospital about 7:30am. Kirk had already left work and was there waiting for us, in the room with Dad, along with the doctor, when we arrived. The doctor said that it was useless to CODE BLUE him again, once the pulse and heart beat stopped and we agreed. So then, after I told him that I would take care of Mother...that he didn't have to worry about her...it was only 5 minutes, and his heart rate went to 0 and he flat-lined, even though the support machine was still breathing for him. He was gone!

We all believe, along with the doctors and nurses that he really went to be with Jesus, when he fell on my left shoulder and went down on the pavement, the day before, on January 24th, but for medical records and since he was put on life support, the official death was January 25th, 2007. I will carry him in my heart forever and always! He was my Dad and my Hero!!!

When I must leave you For a little while-
Please do not grieve
And shed wild tears
And hug your sorrow to you
Through the years,

But start out bravely
With a gallant smile;
And for my sake
And for my name
Live on and do
All things the same,

Feed not your loneliness
On empty days,
But fill each waking hour
In useful ways,

Reach out your hand
In comfort and in cheer
And I in turn will comfort you
And hold you near;

And never, never
Be afraid to die
For I am waiting for you
in the sky!
