History And Purpose
HISTORY

Phi Sigma Pi was founded at Central Missouri State University on February14, 1916, by E.L. Hendricks, C.A. Phillips, and C.H.
McClure. The Fraternity became national in 1921 when a second chapter was founded at Bradley University in Peoria, Ilinois. The National Fraternity has since evolved from an honorary professional fraternity to a professional education fraternity, and then, in 1966, to an honor fraternity for all disciplines. Phi Sigma Pi became coeducational in 1977. Currently, there are chapters chartered throughout the Mid-West and East Coast. Today, over 20,000 students, alumni and faculty in ninety-four institutions nationwide have met the standards for membership in Phi Sigma Pi. The Upsilon Chapter of Phi Sigma Pi is located at Edinboro University in Pennsylvania. We received our charter on October 29, 1938. After a brief period of inactivity we reactivated on October 15, 1991. Phi Sigma Pi was founded on February 14, 1916. Originally a teacher's fraternity, Phi Sigma Pi was not known as an honor fraternity until 1966. The change from a teacher's fraternity to an honor fraternity was made because of closing the state teacher's colleges. Another change was made in Phi Sigma Pi on October 7, 1977. On this date, the constitution of Phi Sigma Pi was amended to admit females. The first female members were admitted to the fraternity in the fall semester of 1977. Phi Sigma Pi continues to evolve to suit the needs of its brothers. Together, we help each other onward in our search for Scholarship, Leadership, and Fellowship.
