[Cynthia Perry] [Development and Implementation of a Network for the Second Look Consignment Shop Clothing Chain]

Unit [1]: [15 May, 2006]

Tasks

[Task 1:Determine the data flow of each store

Task 2:Determine the budget for the project

Task 3:Choose the computers for each store

Task 4:Decide what type of ISP service to use to connect the stores.

If stalled or changed, state why. What did you accomplish this week that is in line with your scheduled tasks?]

1) Determine the flow of data around and between each of the stores. Currently, the only flow of data between each store is by telephone. Nothing is an actual hard copy. [Completed]

Discussing fully with the owner’s of the business about the lack of quick access to information about available inventory in the other stores and how this has lost possible sales has brought clarity to the situation about a lack of inventory database.

2) Determine the budget for the project. [Completed]

Discussion and agreement about the budget being $125,000 . An understanding also agreed to that any overruns not related to late delivery of equipment or training will be absorbed on developer’s end.

3) Choose the computers for the store. [Completed]

It was determined through comparisons of four different computer companies to use DELL computers. The ease of use and price per each computer were the determining factors. There will be one desk top, one server, one printer, and two bar code scanners per store.

4). 4:Decide what type of ISP service to use to connect the stores. [Completed]

After comparing prices between AOL, Earthlink, and Alltel, it was decided that Alltel would be the better ISP for the businesss.

Decisions

[What came up that needed to be addressed? The biggest problem/concern that came up was that one of the buildings needed to be examined by an electrician to determine if the wiring was up to code. After hiring a local electrician, it was determined that the building’s wiring was okay. Did you run into a problem or roadblock? Only the aforementioned concern with a building’s electricity. How did you solve it? Hiring the electrician. What important decisions did you make this week that impacted your project? The electrician set us back one day. What were the key tasks you performed this week? (1)The budget was settled on. (2) The computers were ordered. (3) The ISP was decided upon. (5) The building in Leitchfield, KY was examined for the wiring inside the building.]

Learning

[Answer all questions below.]

1) What helpful feedback did you get in the class (instructor, classmates) and outside the class (user, stakeholder, beneficiary, mentor, expert advisor, others)? What did you learn from this feedback? There wasn’t so much feed back per se just concern about the one building’s wiring. The biggest thing I learned was not to panic in a possible crisis even though it may be a small crisis. There is always an answer to a problem.

2) What resources did you use this week (e.g., people, money, equipment, systems, or software)? The biggest resource was people. Discussions on what was available in terms of being within the budget. The other resource was that of $1200 for the electrician to inspect the building for the sufficiency of the wiring. Did you add new resources? What was your learning? My learning was that things do not always work as one would hope and that you must be flexible. Also, electricians are not cheap.

3) What research did you perform this week that was assisting and/or literature based? What was your learning? Research performed this week was the computer prices and comparisons between ISP costs.

Indicators

[Answer all questions below.]

1) How well did you stick to your project schedule? It was thrown off one day due to the electrician but there are days built in for just such a case.

2) How prepared are you to conclude your project in Unit 10 as required in this course? I will finish on time.

3) How likely is it that you will need to resort to your contingency plan? As of now not very likely.
