The role of USA

Dear Sir,

I tried to read a book about the economical globalization but stopped because it was just insulting USA as if there were no rationality in the actions of USA. The book was just treating USA as if that nation were an average person among other average persons, while the role of USA is that of a nation i.e. of an entity whose environment does not share the same culture and the same values as its own people. Besides the role of USA is that of the strongest one in a group and that automatically lays some responsibility about police like behaviour upon its shoulders.
Typically Europeans talk and think as if there were no other cultural domains in the world, no harsh play around in which one has to protect oneself – with the help of USA that is possible, without it maybe not. There is a cultural diference between two nations and even more so between the different cultural domains. We Europeans value our society structure, we do not want cultural influence from other cultural domains to spoil it from us and from the others who might copy it from us, so good it is. Even though that is a peaceful goal, upkeeping it demands also tough means and not just conversation. Most cultures do not want to be militarily weak or naïve, some even dislike some sides of the moral which Europeans see as a rational universal choise. Letting such nations to a militarily dominant position in the world would be very unwise. Thus the role of USA becomes understandable: we have to realize that people are different and the cultural domains even more so. We need protection in the tough world and it is a good thing that we get it, even if it looks scary.

Yours sincerely,
Hannele Tervola
