Christmas songs
Konsta’s Christmas song
Christmas eve now comes
Already the evening darkens and the land sileces.
Who now alone travels to the graveyard,
Who now alone is in the cold?
Only a small child who like this hurries
Once again brings a candle to the grave.
The place is silent, dark, unmoving,
To the grave of mother light she/he brings.
Flame so unstationary
That grave of a loved one gets for a while.
That watches she/he with eyes so longing,
Watches that and waits again.
When will she/he get a Christmas, when can she/he laugh
With others like before?
But so silent
Is the home of the lonely ones
As if it lacked a blessing.
A voice so silent and melodic
Now from somewhere hears she/he.
Which with warm sentences comforts,
Which makes one’s eyes rise:
Don’t be left in your worries, raise your head again.
Each moment I travel with you.
The child of Cristmas I am.
I will take you to a mansion,
From which you came. As your light I will be seen.
The first Christmas
I was allowed to spend with the bulls in a shelter.
To there the stars bsone their whiteness,
There arrived the sages of the land.
Celebrating it once again I will stay with you
I will make your Christmas beautiful.
You will notice:
The valleys and lands of sorrow
Can be covered with whiteness.
En etsi valtaa, loistoa,
en kaipaa kultaakaan,
m pyydn taivaan valoa
ja rauhaa plle maan.
Se joulu suo, mi onnen tuo
ja mielet nostaa Luojan luo.
Ei valtaa eik kultaakaan,
vaan rauhaa plle maan.
Suo mulle maja rauhaisa
ja lasten joulupuu,
Jumalan sanan valoa,
joss' sieluin kirkastuu.
Tuo kotihin, jos pieneenkin,
nyt joulujuhla suloisin,
Jumalan sanan valoa
ja mielt jaloa.
Luo kyhn niin kuin rikkahan
saa, joulu ihana!
Pimeytehen maailman
tuo taivaan valoa!
Sua halajan, sua odotan,
s herra maan ja taivahan!
Nyt kyhn niin kuin rikkaan luo
suloinen joulus' tuo!
This famous Christmas song by the two famous Finns Sibelius (the composer) & Topelius (a writer) touches the heart of the Finnish speaking Finnish culture. It can be found from the web by its Finnish name En etsi valtaa loistoa or from the address http://wso.williams.edu/cpdl/sound/sib-enet.mid .
The song (my own translation):
I AM NOT LOOKING FOR POWER OR GLORY
I am not looking for power or glory,
I am not earning for gold either,
I ask for the light of heaven
and peace upon the Earth.
It brings christmas which brings happiness
and lifts minds to the Creator.
No power nor glory
but peace upon the Earth.
Allow me a peaceful cottage
and the Christmas tree for the children,
The light of the words of the God
in which my soul becomes enlightened.
Bring to homes, also to small ones,
the most mellow christmas celebration,
some light of the words of the God
and noble generous spirit.
To the poor like to the rich
come christmas wonderful!
To the darkness of the world
bring the light of heaven!
I wish for you, I wait for you,
you lord of the Earth and the heaven!
Now to the poor like to the rich
bring your sweet christmas!
The following is my favourite Christmas song. Have a merry Christmas and a happy new year!
Sylvia’s Christmas song
And so came Christmas alreaedy again to the North, Christmas came already to chests too. And the trees brightly shine already to small cottages. But up by the roof there is still only the cage which shuts my singing bird, and silenced is the sound of suffering of the prison, oh who could remember the sorrows of the singer.
You the brightest of stars, now shed your shine to my distant Finland! And when dims away your shine, bless that country of memories! Antoher one like that I will never find anywhere, Finland is the dearest and most precious to me always! And thanks to it sings the song of Sylvia singing always the most melodic one of all songs.
