Kidnapping for Dinner:
I came to our local ice cream shop. I peeked inside the window. It doesn’t look so busy today. Perhaps I could go inside and help out? I looked around for a bit. I don’t know why, they’re not going to follow me. Mama and daddy are probably passed out drunk by now. So why am I looking around? Old habit, maybe? I shook it off and went inside.
The man behind the counter looked up when the bell in the door frame rang. A slightly surprised look came onto his face.
“Faye!” he said. “So nice to see you again. Avoiding your parents again?”
“Yes!” I said as I was working myself up for no reason. “Can I please stay here until dinner?” The man shook his head at me.
“I’m sorry Faye,” he said. “I cannot do that.”
“I’ll help out if you want,” I insisted. “I’ll even buy anything!” Oh dear, I think I’ve upset him. He doesn’t seem to know what to think now. My eyes trailed down to my feet.
“Or… I can just leave…” I mumbled.
“No, no!” he said quickly. “Don’t go; you can stay.” My eyes quickly turned back to him.
“Really? You mean it?” I asked.
“Yes,” the man said with a sigh. I stood up straight.
“What do you want me to do first?” I asked. He looked around the shop for a brief moment.
“Uh… I want you to sweep the floor first,” he replied. I nodded at him quickly.
“Yes sir!” I answered.
“The broom and dust pan are in the closet over there,” the man said as he pointed off in the right. I marched over and got to work. Sorry to do this to you buddy, but I have to get away. I can’t take being in that house with them.
Close to three o’clock, the door opened. I looked from the counter to see Ashleen working in. I froze in surprise as I ducked down to try and hide from her. Needless to say, that didn’t work. Ashleen looked forward and spotted me. She made about odd face at me.
“Faye?” she asked. I stood up, sheepishly.
“Hi…” I said in a small voice. Ashleen blinked at me confused.
“What are you doing there?” she asked.
“Uh…” I began to say. She waited for me to speak. I lost all words as I stared into her eyes. I finally looked down in shame.
“Oh,” she said. “You’re getting away from…”
“Yes!” I wailed. “This is usually my day of quiet. Don’t judge me!”
“I’m not,” she said. “But why here?” I looked past her out the glass doors.
“Oh Faye,” she said. “This is not the way to do it!”
“I don’t mind,” I said. Ashleen’s face didn’t seem to believe it.
“Listen!” I argued. “I’m just fine! Really!”
“Listen to yourself!” she cried. “This is not the way for you to carry yourself on Saturday!”
“What am I supposed to do?!?” I shouted. Ashleen smiled and shook her head. She walked over and took me by the hand.
“Come to my house,” she said.
“Why?” I asked. She got close in my face and grinned at me.
“Nana’s making dinner tonight!” she said. “Come on, you’ve got to find a better way to escape your family!” I looked deep into her eyes. She does have a point… Business has been slow in here today… I sighed in defeat.
“But, I’m helping out here,” I tried to reason.
“Just leave a note!” Ashleen pushed. “It’ll be fine!”
“Uh…”
“Come on, no more excuses! So what do you say?”
I sighed again. “Fine, fine. I’ll go with you.”
Ashleen just grinned at me. “Good girl! Now just write the note and let’s go.”
I looked at the back room. The man was still gone. Probably out having a smoke. I turned back to Ashleen. She waited for me with a smile on her face. My eyes drew up towards the ceiling. I slowly drew in a deep breath.
“You got any paper on you?” I asked.
“Just use a napkin, silly!” she said.
“Right, right,” I said, nodding. I pulled out a napkin and put it on the counter. I looked to her as if I didn’t know what to do next. Ashleen smiled as she shook her head at me.
“Here, hang on,” she mumbled. My friend reached into her purse and dug around. She pulled out a glittery pink Hello Kitty pen. I took it with a serious look on my face. I clicked it open and began to write.
“Dear Sir,” I said aloud as I wrote. “Went out to have dinner with a friend. See you tomorrow. Sighed, Faye Nash.” I clicked the pen closed and handed it back to Ashleen.
“There,” I said. Ashleen only smiled as she put the pen back into her pink and glittery purse.
“Let’s go!” she said.
“If you insist,” I said with a shrug. Then I came around from the counter and joined Ashleen. We both just walked out the door to her house.
