Session Start: Thu May 22 18:01:17 2008 Session Ident: #tatchat 03* Now talking in #tatchat 06yes but they often go east or west of us 06Hi Mimi 01 Hello Linda and Cynthia 01 Small group? <@Linda> 02Hi Mimi <@Linda> 02I guess so. So far just me and Cynthia. 06so far but I may not make it thru as I have asthma and a bad cold 01 Well then Linda will get lots of help! 06definately 01 We'll give the others a few more minutes then get started <@Linda> 02If Cynthia feels under the weather we can do this at another time if it is possible. 06no I want to do it tonight as summer is harder to schedule areound 03* Katia (Tatter@simplySPACE-4C18366.mc.videotron.ca) has joined #tatchat <@Linda> 02Ok. <@Linda> 02Hi Katia 03* Tatter (Tatter@simplySPACE-9B4AF0F2.dsl.bell.ca) has joined #tatchat Good evening 01 Hello Katia 06hi 03* Tatter is now known as Margaret 01 Margaret too! Hello Margaret! <@Linda> 02Hi Margaret 05Hello to all hello margaret 06hi 05Mimi and Katia, I am here only to ask a couple of questions and get back to my tatting 01 Please ask, we're still hoping for a few more newbies to show up 04Cynthia and Stephanie Wilson, I just sent you two an email 04Last night I bought some Altin Basak 50 thread in four colours and I have the fifth 04the eastern star motif must be finished by Saturday 04It has taken me three hours to do the centre and half of one point 06don't stress it will get easier <@Linda> 02I am glad to read that Cynthia! 04my questions: 1 - when using the horizontal picot guage, how do I manage to get the very first picot to be the same size as the rest. It is always bigger <@Linda> 02I am really wondering if I am ever going to get the hang of this. 042: I am using the samllest guage of Georgia's -- I think 1/16th inch 01 http://www.logicaldatasys.com/tatting/Tatting.html Eastern Star 06yes you will Linda...You are definately smarter than the thread and tools 04when I only have one picot in a ring, do I still have to use it horizontally like I have been doing? <@Linda> 02I agree! Thanks for that! 06Margaret is is shuttle or needle? 04this smallest guage is the same size both ways but if I use it vertically for one picot won't that one picot be a different size? 04yes Mimi that is the pattern 04Mimi would you like me to email you the scan of what is done so far too? 01 1. My opinion: if you use it horizontally for one, you should use horizontally for all 06I agree 01 2. If the first picot of a line is bigger than the rest, you are likely holding the picot gauge in a different position for the ifrst one than for the rest 04it just is quite difficult for me to hold it horizontally for one picot 01 the 2nd picot might lock the gauge into a straighter position once you make it. 01 It takes some practice 04Mimi, did you see my yellow star on my blog? 06try using some thread to make a "imitation" picot to hold the gauge in the right place 04it is the same pattern (with two of the ends tied to give a hanger) but done in all one colour 04what do you mean, Cynthia,? 01 not yet, my browser just stopped working 04so then what is happening is the gauge is slipping and pulling the picot bigger 06take an extra piece of thread and loop it around the thread and gauge to hold it in a more secure position when you are starting 04where do you loop the thread into? 01 right margaret 06under the thread a couple stitches away from your picot and tie a bow just to hold it while you get the picots done 06sorry my cold and asthma are ganging up on me I hope it makes sense <@Linda> 02Are you all saying that you are making all of the picots at the same time? 06no just make them as they come and wrap around the gauge when you get to the picot 01 Found the yellow star, it looks very nice! http://margaretstatting.blogspot.com/2008/03/motif-8.html 04Linda, this is done on the gauge held in a straight row and the picots stay on the gauge until the ring is to be closed <@Linda> 02Got it now Cynthia. 06good sorry if It gets a bit garbled--my fault not yours 01 Right, we looked at this in Lesson 1 http://www.angelfire.com/planet/newtatters/lesson1.html 04Mimi, I sent you a quick email with the scan of the white point so far <@Linda> 02Oh my goodness, I didn't know you could do that. If that was discussed in the first or second lesson, I wasn't able to get on line for the classes then. 01 In the picot gauges section, it's the photo on the left 04the tip is not where is should be as the second side isn't there yet 01 You might have a look, it's kind of interesting! using the gaugelike that for needle tatter is a bit more difficult bbut managable <@Linda> 02Yes thank you Mimi I will. 06yes it is. I did 1 from her pattern all in white for my uncle as he is a mason and hiw wife was in Eastern Star. He put it on her memorial picture 04I would love to stay but the tatting is taking longer than expected and I also have square to make tonight for this reception too 01 Good luck Margaret, keep trying with the gauge, you'll get it if you practice 06good luck and peace, margaret <@Linda> 02I looked at that lesson and I thought I was looking as something totally different than what you are telling me now. I thought it was just a repeat demo to show how making a picot was done. 04the eastern star will have a pinback and it is my gift to the honoree who is a Grand Representative of Ontario in the Eastern Star 01 what a great gift that is great 06awesome I'd say 04I will share this here now as it will may not happen now <@Linda> 02Bye Margaret. 04I am in what they call the 'line offices' in the Eastern Star in this Chapter. 04next year I will be Conductress. If the chapter was somehow able to stay alive until Sept. 2010, I would be installed as the Worthy Matron well done Margaret 06just keep up the good work and you will be reqarded 06make that re warded 04I had planned on tatting each of my 18 officers (myself, too) for that year, one of these stars to wear during our services nice idea 06you go girl even if you get it done after it is an awesome thankyou gift 04now I will say goodnight so you people can do some tatting 01 Good night Margaret, take care 06come back when you can...Peace night margaret and take care 01 OK NOW THAT IT'S SO LATE, LET'S SIGN IN :) 04is this the last lesson until September? 01 Mimi Dillman, ntrop@ix.netcom.com Snohomish WA USA 01 No, one more next week 03* Margaret (Tatter@simplySPACE-9B4AF0F2.dsl.bell.ca) has left #tatchat KATIA VALLÉE SHERBROOKE QC CANADA LADY_ELHASA@HOTMAIL.COM 06Cynthia Stevenson, Stillwater OK, brasthatfit@yahoo.com 01 TONIGHT'S LESSON IS http://www.angelfire.com/planet/newtatters/lesson4.html 01 TONIGHT WE DO SPLIT RINGS, YAY!!! 06fun 01 AND IT'S ALL FOR LINDA'S BENEFIT 01 3 TEACHERS TO ONE :) <@Linda> 02Linda002@sbcglobal.net Palmdale Calif. 01 STILL THERE LINDA? 06make that 2 1/2 the way I feel 01 SORRY CYNTHIA HOPE YOU GET WELL SOON GIVE YOURSELF SOME CREDIT CYNTHIA YOUR WORTH A FULL TEACHER 01 FIRST STEP TONIGHT IS TO ASK IF THERE ARE ANY QUESTIONS REMAINING FROM LESSON 3 OR ANY OF THE EARLIER LESSONS 06I will just no energy right now <@Linda> 02Yes Thanks Mimi. The sadest thing about this lesson is, my mother is visiting and will be here until tomorrow, and I haven't had a chance to look at the lesson! It's not sad she is here, it is sad I didn't get to look at the lesson! 01 WELL, THERE'S NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT :) 06look now we'll wait 06:) >:D< 06the other is a hug :) 01 OH, I THOUGHT MAYBE IT WAS BACKGROUND MUSIC :) <@Linda> 02Ok I will be right back. K 06the shrug/wrap I'm designing as I go is about 8 in across--eventually 48 inches IN TATTING? 06I've taken the idea from a crochet pattern--yes I'm attting it in yarn--all easy stitches SWEET 06I'll share the pattern and pics when I get it done. Don't hold your breath though IM SURE ITS GOING TO BE GOEGIOUS SORRY FOR THE SPELLING <@Linda> 02Ok I am back and I looked at the split ring. Now for my first stupid question of the evening. A spilt ring is a ring made of 2 colors? NO 01 IT CAN BE 01 BUT 06I hope so it is the first attempt at designing something that large and with a needle 01 THE MAIN THING ABOUT THE SPLIT RING IS THAT IT'S 1/2 FLIPPED STITCHES AND 1/2 NON-FLIPPED STITCHES MADE WITH A 2ND SHUTTLE 01 THAT WAY, YOUR THREADS END AT A DIFFERENT POSITION ON THE RIGN THAN THE PLACE THEY STARTED 01 IF YOU ARE USING 2 DIFFERENT THREADS, THE RESULTING RING WILL BE 2 DIFFERENT COLORS; IF BOTH THREADS ARE THE SAME COLOR, THE RING IS ALL ONE COLOR 01 STILL CLEAR AS MUD? i would love to see a photo or scan of what you have done cynthia 01 good luck with the wrap Cynthia - tatting with yarn is a challenge, depending on the fiber <@Linda> 02I see. I am going to have to start a practice piece and try it out and see if I have any problems with it. I focused so much when I learned to do the ds that I got the stitch to flip I am wondering if I will have a hard time trying to make sure it doesn't flip now. 06but it ends up for a mock picot very easily 06yes but it takes concentration and it does work <@Linda> 02what is the advantage of a split ring and a mock picot? 01 THAT'S EXACTLY THE DIFFICULTY LINDA - SUDDENLY NOT FLIPPING STITCHES ANY MORE 01 OH NOW WHAT TO LECTURE ON, ANOTHER FAVORITE TOPIC! 01 ADVANTAGE: 06no cut, tie, ends to work in and you are at the next row 01 CAN BE USED TO CLIMB FROM ONE ROUND TO ANOTHER 01 THE MOCK PICOT IS USED WHEN CLIMBING FROM ONE ROUND TO THE NEXT SOT HAT THE EXIT FROM THE SPLIT RING LOOKS LIKE EVERY OTHER PICOT ON THE ROW <@Linda> 02Oh. Does anyone have a class for some one that is newer than a beginner? 01 OTHERWISE THE WORK IN THAT AREA WOULD BE WONKY 06no but you can e-mail any of us and we will help 06Linda, check my butterflies are free post--only rings of ds and picots <@Linda> 02I have turned out some very wonky work with my practice pieces so far so I think I am going to have to learn split rings and mock picots. Thank you I will email you all if I get into trouble If that is ok. 06yes <@Linda> 02I will Cynthia. Thanks. sure linda all email are welcome 06if we're both online we can meet in the chat room as it is open most of the time <@Linda> 02I am working on a piece of edging right now for practice. It is one shuttle rings and picots. I am having trouble keeping my place when I lay my work down and pick it up again. 06try a spring type clothes pin and a pencil to mark your pattern <@Linda> 02I also notice that I am having a bit of trouble trying to understand patterns. neat idea cynthia 06I had to do something as the dog thinks if I pick up tatting it is time to go outside...inside...outside...inside reading pattern come with time and practice linda , i would suggest to read the pattern first and try to rewrite it in word or term you understand <@Linda> 02I am marking my pattern. I didn't think about a clothes pin. Thanks Cynthia 06good Idea Katia 06when the dog beats me to the tatting it really helps as shejust carries it around by the cloithespin--stringing thread all over lol dont we looooooove our pet ;) 06yes she ate a tatted doily that was starched with a mint starch so I had to do that over...LOL and hugs for all <@Linda> 02I love that Cynthia. I have two dogs. I guess they would have to fight over my tatting if they did that! <@Linda> 02I like the idea of rewriting the pattern. 06that can help also diagraming part of it 01 YOU CAN PUT THE REWRITTEN VERSION ON A SMALL CARD OR OTHER PAPER SMALL ENOUGH FOR YOUR WORKBAG TOO 01 OR BIG ENOUGH TO READ! it help alot many of my student who do this before they start any pattern find themself doing the pattern without thinking , and those who does nt well they struggle all the way <@Linda> 02I thought about rewriting the pattern but I couldn't understand one part of it enough to put it in my words. Now I am trying out things that this one part could mean and if I hit on the right method, I can rewrite that part in my own words. 06what part uis confusing? what pattern are you doing , if we can help you understand that part we will be glade to <@Linda> 02One part of the pattern says,"+ (same join as prev small R)" there are several small rings so I don't know for sure which small ring they are talking about. 06is it the hen and chicks <@Linda> 02If I join in the one I think they mean, my thread that is wrapped around my left hand knots. 06is the pattern on line or from the class? <@Linda> 02No it is called "Single shuttle WAve Edge. 06Ok I think I have it...brb.. <@Linda> 02It is on line and very simple. <@Linda> 02It is also very pretty. do you have the link for that pattern? <@Linda> 02I was just trying to remember where it came from and I don't think I have a link for it. I found it by a search. let me try to fund it 01 is this it? http://www.iglou.com/members/mantia/crafts/OneShuttle.html 01 what pretty thread <@Linda> 02Is the thread a lavendar and light blue? yes <@Linda> 02I am guessing that is it. Single Shuttle WAve Edge its the name of the edge <@Linda> 02I can't find it as fast as you did. 06http://members.iglou.com/mantia/crafts/OneShuttle.html <@Linda> 02Yes Katia I think you are right. 06I think it is the one yes its that one 01 THE QUESTION AGAIN WAS DISTINGUISHING WHERE TO JOIN? 06Count down 0on the directions and which line is the first problem? one way to try to see how a writen pattern will look is by trying to draw the writen pattern 01 I DON'T SEE ANY MENTION OF SMALL RINGS, ONLY THE LARGE RING? 06art doesn't count just try and see does true cynthia <@Linda> 02Yes Mimi. After the * it's R:3+(same join as prev small R) Do you see that instruction? 01 AH NOW I DO. BLAME THE HEADACHE 01 THE PREVIOUS SMALL RING WOULD BE THE RING BEFORE THE LARGE RIGN 06the larg ring is just the starting ring 01 BUT THAT CAN'T BE A CORRECT INSTRUCTION 01 LOOKS TO ME LIKE SHE MEANS TO JOIN TO THE LAST SMALL RING OF THE REPEAT BEFORE LAST? 01 ANYONE? 06I'm fadeing fast so I think I will say Peace and sign out ton ight. 01 I THINK IT WOULD BE A LITTLE EASIER TO SEE IN A SINGLE-COLOR THREAD 01 NIGHT CYNTHIA <@Linda> 02I am not for sure exactly which small ring is the one in question. I just RW my work and went into the first picot of the last small ring I could find. 01 GET WELL SOON 01 EXACTLY LINDA night cynthia take care 06Night and Peace, thanks 03* Cynthia (Tatter@simplySPACE-DAEFDCD4.stl1cmta01.stwrok.ok.dh.suddenlink.net) has left #tatchat <@Linda> 02Bye Cynthia and Thanks! 01 IT WILL BE THE LAST SMALL RING OF THE SCALLOP ON THE SAME SIDE THAT YOU'RE STARTING A NEW SCALLOP ON 01 OH WHAT A BAD SENTENCE hehe but i do aggree with you mimi 01 BUT I THINK YOU HAVE THE SENSE OF IT EVEN IF THE PATTERN IS A BIT TELEGRAPHIC <@Linda> 02Ok Mimi I will print out that sentence and study on it a bit and I am sure it will become clear to the old gal here. 01 SHE DOES INDEED MEAN PREVIOUS SMALL RING TO BE THE ONE TO THE LEFT OF WHERE YOU'RE NOW WORKING 01 IF IT DOES YOU MAY NEED HELP :))) 01 THE PATTERN IS BASICALLY A SET OF SCALLOPS ON EACH SIDE OF THE WORK 01 YOU WORK A SCALLOP ON ONE SIDE, RW, THEN WORK THE SCALLOP ON THE OTHER SIDE, RW, ETC <@Linda> 02Yes Mimi that is right. A set of scallops on each side. 01 EACH TIME YOU MAKE THE FIRST RING OF THE NEXT SCALLOP ON A SIDE, YOU WILL JOIN THAT RING TO THE LAST PICOT OF THE LAST RING OF THE LAST SCALLOP ON THAT SIDE 01 WHWE 01 WHEW ANOTHER LONG WON 01 ONE <@Linda> 02And I also that it was the closest picot to the left of the work. 01 EXACTLY 01 YOU DID WHAT MADE SENSE 01 AND MADE YOUR WORK LOOK LIKE THE PHOTO!! 01 THAT'S A BIG LEAP OF LOGIC, AND ONE I LIKE TO SEE HAPPEN WITH STUDENTS 01 THEN I KNOW THEY ARE ON THEIR WAY TO SELF-SUFFICIENCY <@Linda> 02Very Close until I got dinner togeter and lost my place! 01 THAT WILL HAPPEN - DOES TO ME TOWARDS THE END OF THE DAY WHEN I'M TIRED 01 BUT IF YOU LAY YOUR WORK DOWN 01 AND LOOK TO FIND THE LAST LR 01 THEN YOU CAN COUNT YOUR WAY ALONG THE PATTERN aye and or like cynthia said ad a safey pin to where you are 01 EVENTUALLY I WOULD MEMORIZE SOMETHING IN MY HEAD THAT SAYS <@Linda> 02I am learning that too. Easier to find if you have a point to focus on. and mark the place on the pattern 01 RINGS OF X PICOTS SEPARATED BY Y DS'S MAKE THE SCALLOPS 01 AND ONE RING GOES ON EACH OF THE P'S OF THE LARGE RING 01 YOU'LL GET THE SENSE OF THE REPEAT WITH REPETITION 01 PRETTY EDGING 01 I WONDER IF ANYONE HAS TRIED A CORNER WITH IT? aye it is, no clue <@Linda> 02I have pretty much found out what you are saying is true. Now to learn how to mark and not lose my place. You gals are great and I do thank you very, very much. I feel a bit guilty here having you all to myself and you are taking your tatting or family time to help just me. 01 IT'S OUR PLEASURE 01 WE VOLUNTEERED REGARDLESS OF THE # OF STUDENTS its our pleasure 01 YOU LUCKED OUT AND GOT US TO YOURSELF 01 SO YOU COULD GET SPECIAL HELP - JUST LIKE MARGARET DID 01 MEANTIME ENJOY YOUR MOTHER'S VISIT besdie we love helping other tatter <@Linda> 02I feel I should let you get to your lives it is after the hour anyway and I will go and visit with my mom. We are quite a pair. 01 THAT'S HOW IT IS WHEN I VISIT MY PARENTS, STITCHERY IN THE EVENING WHILE DAD WATCHES TV 01 HE LIKES HIS KNITTED SLIPPERS, SO HE GETS THEM :) have fun with your mom linda hehe 01 HOPEFULLY YOU'LL HAVE A CHANCE TO READ OVER LESSON 4 01 AND GIVE SPLIT RINGS A TRY 01 AFTER AWHILE YOU'LL SEE THE ADVANTAGE 01 AND 01 SO MANY OF HTE PATTERNS ON THE INTERNET USE SPLIT RING <@Linda> 02Thanks again so much and I WILL be back next week. Thanks again both of you and good night! 01 FOR INSTANCE - JANE EBORALL'S TAT IT AND SEE AND SO FORTH 01 HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND - HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY 01 SEE YOU NEXT TIME KATIA? happy memorial day ladies yes ill be here next week mimi 03* @Linda (Tatter@simplySPACE-94DAB2BB.dsl.irvnca.sbcglobal.net) has left #tatchat 01 HAVE A GOOD WEEK, SEE YOU THEN you too 01 GOOD NIGHT Session Close: Thu May 22 19:10:54 2008
