Session Start: Wed Jun 14 17:52:14 2006 Session Ident: #tatchat * Now talking in #tatchat * Topic is '' * Set by ChanServ on Wed Jun 14 17:25:21 hi mimi Hi Anita, Brenda and MAry! i am doing great! we are moving into a house beginning of next month getting excited now to have more room a real house! Still in London? and i am going to be able to set up a cutting station in my basement yes cutting station? A craft room for you, do the girls get a yard? we are getting a 3 bedroom 2 bath town house small yard but has a "communal" type front yard do you rent or buy? and i will have part of the recroom for my craft stuff rent what does it cost? 850 a month that is pounds right canadian dollars Rents are lower there... even with the weak US dollar! are you in london england or london ontario ontario oh ha ha this is one of the lower rents i have found for a house some went up to about 1200 cant afford that :( that sounds more familiar for a house wonderful, yes more like that here. congratulations ty :) like i said i am getting excited about having more space just wish my cat would have lived to come with us :( Oh no mimi do you remember me telling you he was attacked by a dog? Did you? Was it awhile ago? he got an infection from it and antibiotics didnt work yes in late dec Oh that's so sad. I'm soryr to hear it. He was a beautiful cat did you witness the attack, it is a great fear of mine to have our cat attacked. he died od liver failure yes the attack was in our home it was a foster dog we were trying to rescue were you successful in the dog's rescue? he is now adopted by a couple who never plans to have kids or cats and he is an animal trainer so i think that is the best home for him (the dog that is) lol have you fostered for long? it had been badly mistreated before we took him out of the shelter that was the first one we had we are going to foster cats when we come home after bible camp this summer possibly dogs too but not at the same time wont do that again Our cat does not like other cats Neither does my cat. But she was raised as an only. neither did our cat, but he liked dogs Her cousin kitties were raised with a dog and all get along fine that is why we tried fostering a dog He was 'abandoned' so to speak by a neighbour, I am allergic but he is such a joy looks like we have a small class today mimi have the two of you looked over lesson 4? Briefly skimmed it Don't forget we ran short on lesson 3, too, missed MTT except in brief MMT? magic thread trick * Tatter has joined #tatchat * Tatter has quit IRC (Quit: Tatters 4 forever!) Did you both have a chance to look over the magic thread trick and the idea of strategy to reduce thread ends? sorry that was me..... trying to open another window lol I've known about the magic thread trick from embroidery I tried sewing ends in Lily's way Embroiderers use MTT... interesting! Too bad they didn't share it with tatters sooner than 10 years ago :) My 36-motif-doily had 72 ends to sew in or pull in, thankuflly I had just learned MTT so I could do it with less "agony" of ends http://www.gagechek.com/slb/demo/demo.html here is a good site with video of MTT I wasn't pleased with my results as the 'waistband' becomes slanted, is this how it does it for you? and some great instruction on how it is done I don't get any slanting with Lily's way... do you think perhaps you split a thread when sending the needle through? with lilys way? I did it over and over again because I thought I might have but no, I didn't Hmmm. Was it after pulling taut to get the thread to lay inside? Did it go away after relaxing? That MTT looks promising next question.... did you feel the stitches pop inside? no I didnt feel anything, I just pulled the thread tight, I tried pulling slowly, and I tried pulling quickly same results and one of the legs seems to be pulled back more noticable on one side of the work than the other. I thought perhaps I had pulled the thread too tight so I wiggled the work back and forth to loosen but still the same look. ok if you didnt feel the "pop" you may have sewn the stitches in the wron direction there is a direction? When I follow the direction, the thread does indeed go hide when I pull it taut. These are the times when I want a web cam!! make sure you go up between the pant legs and down between the DS Also, keep the needle under the cap but above the core thread i got that right right mimi???? Actually Anita the instructions show the reverse. the thread is hidden but the stitches are affected. It all depends which side you are looking at From the needle-in side, I push the needle between the ds ok lol easier to do when i am doing it rather than trying to remember then it comes out on the other side between the legs I flip the work over to make sure I put the needle in accurately if I feel resistance, I pull it out and try again (resistance - likely splitting a thread) well as far as I can tell I am doing it 'correctly' so lets just go on to another subject. ok, let's do split rings anita! Would you like to teach tonight? ok SORRY SHORT MEMORY NEEDLE TATTERS OR SHUTTLE LADIES? I am a needle MARY? trying to learn both OK SO LETS START WITH THE NEEDLE THEN FIRST OFF WE WILL NEED A LENGTH OF THREAD (AND KEEP IN MIND SR TAKE UP ALOT OF IT) CUT OFF THE BALL A SR WILL BE WRITTEN UP IN A PATTERN AS 6-6/6-6 WITH MEANS TO DO 6DS PICOT 6DS,AS IF YOU WERE DOING AN ORDINARY RING THEN UNTHREAD YOUR NEEDLE AND USING THE END THAT WAS THREADED THROUGH THE NEEDLE DO 6DS PICOT 6DS BUT FOR THE SECOND SIDE REVERSE THE HALVES OF THE DS IE DO STEP 2 THEN STEP 1 OF THE DS THEN YOU WILL RETHREAD THE NEEDLE AND CLOSE THE RING AS YOU WOULD FOR A NORMAL SCMR ANY QUESTIONS SO FAR? can it be done with 2 needles instead of rethreading all the time? NOPE YOU WILL NEED ONE NEEDLE AS YOU NEED TO USE THAT ONE THREAD FOR BOTH MOVEMENTS The same thread is the core all the way through the ring - therefore one needle. http://www.handyhandstatting.com/splitring.htm HERE IS A GOOD SITE WITH PHOTOS SO YOU CAN SEE WHY YOU NEED TO UNTHREAD AND RETHREAD THE NEEDLE AS WELL AS SEEING THE MECHANICS OF DOING THE RING NOW IF WE ARE GOING TO DO A SR USING SHUTTLES YOU WILL WANT 2 SHUTTLES WOUND CTM AND YOU WILL START AS THOUGH YOU ARE GOING TO DO A TRUE RING, WINDING THE THREAD AROUND YOUR HAND DO THE FIRST PART OF THE RING, THEN DROPPING THE SHUTTLE YOU ARE WORKING WITH AND TURNING YOU HAND PALM UP SO IT LOOKS LIKE A DEAD SPIDER (LEGS IN THE AIR) YOU WILL THEN PICK UP YOUR SECOND SHUTTLE, AND DO THE SECOND SIDE BEING CAREFUL TO DO THE DS IN REVERSE ORDER (STEP 2 THEN STEP 1) AND ALSO TO NOT (YES NOT!!!!) TURNING YOUR STITCHES FOR THIS SIDE ANY QUESTIONS SO FAR? yes, after all this time reminding you to always flip your stitches... now we say "maybe not always" :) LOL YUP MOST TATTERS HAVE DIFFICULTY GETTING THE FLIP..... NOW WE DONT WANT YOU TO DO IT :) OK.... AFTER YOU HAVE BOTH SIDES DONE YOU CAN CLOSE YOUR SR AS YOU WOULD ANY OTHER RING SOMETHING ALOT OF US FIND USEFUL IS TO TRY TO MOVE THE CORE THREAD A BIT RIGHT AFTER DOING THE FIRST DS ON THE SECOND HALF OF THE SR THIS WAY IF YOU HAVE FLIPPED IT BY ACCIDENT YOU WILL NOT HAVE TO UNDO ALOT OS STITCHES I frequently check for core thread sliding on the 2nd half of a split ring it's easy to get distracted and forget to not flip IT IS TOO EASY TO FLIP HALF A STITCH AND NOT REALIZE IT UNTIL YOU GO TO CLOSE THE RING KEEP CHECKING OK ON TO BEADS...... UNLESS EITHER OF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS no questions go for it AND IF YOU DO PLEASE JUMP IN AND SAY SO! DONT WAIT TO BE ASKED LOL split rings are very useful! http://www.georgiaseitz.com/classes/beads.html Lots of internet designers use them, so you may want to practice in case that next beautiful pattern you want to do has SR. ON THIS PAGE THERE IS A SCAN TO SHOW HOW BEADS CAN BE ADDED EITHER ON OR OVER A PICOT WHEN BEADS ARE GOING TO BE USED IN YOUR DESIGN YOU WILL NEED TO PLAN OUR THEIR PLACEMENT A BIT ANY BEADS THAT WILL BE ON A PICOT WILL NEED TO BE STRUNG ONTO YOUR THREAD BEFORE YOU WORK, ANY BEADS TO BE PLACED OVER A PICOT CAN BE ADDED AS YOU GO IF A DESIGNER PLANNED TO HAVE BEADS IN THEIR DESIGN THEY WILL TELL YOU WHAT ORDER AND HOW MANY TO STRING THOUGH DONT LET WHAT THE DESIGNER PLANNED BE THE ONLY THING THAT GUIDES YOU YOU CAN GET ALOT OF DIFFERENT LOOKS BY ADDING BEADS IN DIFFERENT PLACES AND DIFFERENT STYLES OF BEADS THEY CAN GREATLY CHANGE THE LOOK OF A TATTED PIECE WHEN YOU ARE GOING TO PUT A BEAD ON A PICOT AS SHOWN IN THE DIAG. YOU ONLY HAVE TO TAT UP TO THE POSITION YOU WANT THE BEAD THEN SLIDE THE BEAD INTO POSITION AND CONTINUE TO TAT ANY QUESTIONS? CLEAR AS MUD???? LOL :-) OK LADIES THERE IS ONLY REALLY ONE OTHER THING WE WERE GOING TO COVER IN THESE BEGINNERS LESSONS AND THAT IS MORE OF A HELP SO YOU KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU JOIN IN ON THE MONDAY NIGHT CLASSES NOW.... FIRST OFF THESE CLASSES HAVE ENDED UNTIL FALL BUT..... http://www.georgiaseitz.com/2006/heesbk5edge7.pdf HERE IS THE PATTERN WHICH GEORGIA SENT TO US FOR THE CLASS NOW DONT GET SCARED OFF THAT IT MAY LOOK A BIT MORE COMPLECATED THAN WE HAVE TRIED UP TO NOW BECAUSE IF YOU LOOK AT THE LOG GEORGIA HAS GIVEN US YOU CAN SEE THAT SHE GOES INTO DETAIL OF HOW TO DO EACH SECTION OF THE PATTERN http://www.georgiaseitz.com/2006/20060313log.txt this is pretty much the same format we've used here - published lesson, the post the log after for students to review ALTHOUGH THE MONDAY NIGHT CLASS MAY BE MORE ADVANCED, GEORGIA AND THE GUEST TEACHERS ALL ATTEMPT and for those who missed the lesson to also read TO KEEP THE INSTRUCTIONS QUITE FILLED OUT SO YOU CAN KEEEP UP ALOT OF THE PATTERNS IN THE MONDAY NIGHT CLASS ONLY LOOK ADVANCED UNTIL WE ALL GET DISCUSSING IT Other lessons can be found at http://www.georgiaseitz.com - 6 years' worth! Find the links to the various classes THEN YOU REALIZE IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF WATCHING STITCH COUNTS sorry, links to the year, then you'll get a list of classes. IT IS WORTH THE TIME TO LOOK AT THESE CLASSES!!! GEORGIA HAS PUT ALOT INTO THIS AND IT SHOWS ALSO GEORGIA AND THE OTHER TEACHERS SHOW EVERYONE NEW TECHNIQUES THAT WE HAVENT SEEN HERE YET SOME MAY TAKE SOME PRACTICE BUT ARE WORTH THE LOOK AND EVERYONE IS ALWAYS FRIENDLY AND WILLING TO HELP WITH ANY QUESTIONS ANYONE HAS I AM SURE I SPEAK FOR MIMI AS WELL WHEN I SAY THAT WE ARE CONFIDENT YOU WILL BOTH ENJOY GEORGIA'S CLASS AND NOT HAVE DIFFICULTY KEEPING UP WITH IT i agree I THINK OUR CLASSES HERE HAVE COVERED ALOT MORE "NEW TECHNIQUES" THAN YOU WILL BE EXPECTED TO LEARN IN G'S CLASSES IN A SHORT TIME LOL Some may be a bit esoteric :) The instructions for the beaded items are done with shuttles, is there any tips on changing them to needle as far as threading beads is concerned? And if you like a more structured apprach to finding something to learn, you can look at http://www.geocities.com/shuttlebirds/Techniques_Level_of_Tatting_and_Basic_tatting_kit.htm The Shuttlebirds give an annual tatting workshop, and tell their teachers to rate their classes by skill level based on these skills I HAVE STARTED USING DENTAL THREADERS TO THREAD MY BEADS ONTO MY THREADS FOR NEEDLE TATTING another convert to dental floss threaders :) YOU STILL NEED TO HAVE BEADS THREADED ON BEFORE YOU START THOUGH IF THEY ARE TO BE ON THE PICOT LOL YUP DOES THAT ANSWER YOUR QUESTION? Another needle tatting with beads guide: beads on the core thread need to be big enough to accommodate the needle and thread Beads are a big subject. Popular too! You'll see lots of lessons on Georgia's site about them. THERE IS SO MUCH YOU CAN DO WITH BEADS WE COULD HAVE A WHOLE COURSE JUST ON THEM! ANY OTHER QUESTIONS LADIES? 4+ weeks too! LOL NO WAY WE COULD FINISH IN 4 WEEKS!!!!! LOL Thanks to both Brenda and MAry for stikcing with the lessons for all 4 weeks. You've been great students I can tell from your questions that you are trying and accomplishing a lot I hope you like it enough to continue It's kind of tough when you're on your own. please dont think that you cant join us for another set come fall though.... :) But hopfully you'll find some local tatters too I'm not too sure about Kamloops, though even though we mentioned the monday class :) so these other classes aren't going on now? not til fall? But there is a group of lacemakers in ATlanta I was wondering I am using a no.7 needle with no.30 thread but am having trouble still seeing my core thread on the chains when I do two color tatting, if I used a no.8 needle might the stitches be more likely to cover the core for me. and I think they have tatters i will likely be in the classroom wed nights to chat and answer questions and Atlanta is not to long of a drive from Columbia SC but no official class as mimi and i both are busy with summer break where another very active group gives an annual Tat Day - Palmettos tattesr I met someone on line from Kamloops she is a shuttle tatter I think. Great! Needle size difficulty - Anita would know better, but I believe a smaller needle will be one help brenda make sure your needle and thread are almost the same size Another help is to make sure that you push the DS together and tighten your work there should be as little difference in size as possible So that the chains make a nice curve and the core thread should show less if the stitches are more tightly packed a chain will always curve if snugged up properly shuttle tatters will have the same problem if they don't snug up the work I think I will try a smaller needle otherwise my stitches looked smushed together and I loose stitch definition. Smallest needle you can use and still pull through the stitches is the best choice. deffinatly Great. by the way you are both welcome to email me through the summer if any questions ever come up Same here... I may not be able to read every day, but I will reply evenutally Thanks so much for your help. I will definitely be trying out that MTT. ntrop at ix.netcom.com please dont feel that you have to wait until fall to have questions answered anital76@hotmail.com or ahobden@hotmail.com frequently you can get help on the tatting lists, too - or someone else may ask about something that has bothered you and get an answer! i check both daily :) which tatting lists? yahoo and msn both have great groups for tatter etatters@yahoo.com and tatting@yahoo.com are the most active ones I think. If you like an on-line forum, there's http://www.etatters.com etatters is a great one! if nothing else look into that one! Lots of good discussions on all. I joined needletatting two msn group, haven't quite figured out how the etatters.com works, there are so many messages on that one I find it hard to keep up. always nice to see others work and to get ideas from others with etatters i think you have to pick which threads look intersting to you others groups I joined are not very active but I am finding they have the same members dont try to read everything there is a lot of overlap, so I do a lot of deleting :) you will deffinatly find the same people around :) I have spend more time looking at tatting than I have tatting. some are far more active than others but those that are showing up everywhere tend to be great for answering your questions too that is why they go everywhere is looking to help others :) me too Brenda - virtual tatting sometimes takes over :) lol yup how many times do you do a new pattern? I am finding I do something once and then I want to try others I am wondering if I should stick with a pattern until I get it 'right' I'm the same way Brenda. I was getting really bored doing that hexagonal doily i have to really like something to do it more than once Main reason for me to repeat a pattern would be to make sure I understood a technique that wasn't easily found elsewhere to try if you find a pattern you really like then you wont mind sticking with it Do you think I can still improve my tatting though if I keep doing different things or because someone wants one as a gift:) deffinatly Yes you can Brenda. thank goodness. you will still be practicing the same techniques... just different orders But if you stick with easier techniques for a while, you may find it easier to progress to harder ones later but you can do the easier techniques in many different patterns. I am working on the awareness ribbon right now trying to get the two color technique down. what are you working on mary ok ladies thanks for comming but i am now having difficulty seeing my computer screen :( have to get away from the computer now night all I'm still working on the bookmark thank anita, maybe see you in a group sometime. and dont forget to email me if you have any questions Night Anita, thanks and good luck on your move gnight thanks :) night * AnitaH has quit IRC (Quit: Tatters 4 forever!) oh that bookmark, you sure picked a hard project to learn on! I've been told it's a very simple design It's a beautiful one, though... sometimes it takes beauty to motivate me to keep on trying I think it has all beginner techniques. but you had a rather complex color scheme if I recall? just 2 color what was the link for that? it's not a public design...I got permission from the person who holds the copyright to do it there was a photo, though yes And what I meant by complex was that you were doing more than just rings in one color and chains in another that's the easiest it's when you have rings in 2 different colors, or chains in 2 different colors, that it gets more complex How's it coming along? but I wasn't doing that...it was simple 2 color and it's not going well...I'm about to give up on it I have a folder on my computer I put pictures in of tatting I like to look at again and again. Not that I want to do them, I just like to look. And then the more I learn the more I can see how they are stitched. yes I have some pictures of things I like too I like that Polish guy Jan's work. I would love to tatt like him. not only will you be able to ppick out how they were done, you may eb able to count knots and make your own! He tats beautifully, and his designs are nice too. I'm not too sure of "jan's method" yet for offsetting the picots, but it does look nice Does he do books and patterns for sale do you know? who is this person? I didn't understand where he was coming from until I did it. I would just reverse my stitch order like when you do a split ring. http://www.frywolitka.slupsk.pl/index_en.php?id=_about_me Eye Candy! I believe he might sell in Poland, but I have not heard that he has developed any ability to sell internationally There would probably be a LOT of chatter on the tatting lists if he did as a lot of us have admired his work. Thank you for your help mimi, do you have any of your work on the internet anywhere's? I have an old website where I keep some patterns well I think I will call it a night and go have some supper. bye. Url escapes me I'm trying to find it http://home.netcom.com/~ntrop/mimihome.html what size thread is the most commonly used? Totally to the taste of the tatter, Mary Some swear by size 80 I tend to use 20-40 thanks. Mostly because I'm a bit nearsighted and I have trouble seeing the stitches in size 80 * bctoadlover-N has left #tatchat But size 80 does make beautiful dainty results ok thanks Have a nice summer YOu too Mary, keep tatting!\ Session Close: Wed Jun 14 19:24:24 2006
