Christian Music

The "Christian" music scene has been very controversial when it comes to the type of instruments used, beats, melodies, words etc. Herewith, a few guidelines regarding Christian music.

  • Christian music must praise the Lord Jesus Christ; it does not praise anything relating to man
     Psa 28:7  The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.
  • It is for the LORD, NOT for the world
    Col 3:16  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
  • It should produce new songs, not recycled worldly music
     Psa 144:9  I will sing a new song unto thee, O God: upon a psaltery and an instrument of ten strings will I sing praises unto thee.
  • The music must be clear and understandable, not deceitful and vague
    1Cor 14:15  What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
  •  The MESSAGE is the important part, NOT the music
     Psa 66:2  Sing forth the honour of his name: make his praise glorious.
  • The music should be performed in the church, not secular places such as dance halls, clubs etc.
    Heb 2:12  Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee.
  •  The music must nourish the spirit, NOT the flesh
     Col 3:16  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
  • It must be dedicated to the Lord, and not worldly
     Eph 5:18  And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
     19  Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your  heart to the Lord;

Some Miscellaneous things about music:

References to Melody: Isaiah 23:16; 51:3;  Ephes 5:18-19 (above)

The MUSICIAN must also be DIFFERENT to the world. Look at David:

1Sam 16:18  Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him.
