LESSON 2

We will now learn the Māori Articles (a, an & the) and Particles.

ARTICLES

First of all, the Māori equivalent of A and SOME is HE
And the Māori equivalent for THE is TE. Just like "the", (but minus the h). And the plural (more than 1) form of te is NGĀ, (just the same as the English -s or -es at the end of words, exept for ngā is used at the beginning of words).

Here's some examples:
A and Some = He
The = Te and Ngā
a pen = he pene
the pen = te pene
some pens = he pene
the pens = ngā pene
(Notice how the Mäori noun stays the same)

PARTICLES

We now will learn what the particles "nei", "nā" and "rā" mean.
"nei" basically means near the speaker. "nā" means near the listener, and "rā"means in the distance and away from both the speaker and the listener.

And a couple of other very common particles are "mai" and "atu". "Mai" means towards, and "atu" is the opposite, meaning away from.
So for example: "Haere" means "to move".
So therefore "haere mai" can mean "come" (move towards) and "haere atu" means "go" (move away).
