DELHI TOO HAS ITS BUDDING SACHIKA |
|
|
Sachika Ingale |
|
Mumbai has its squash kid, Sachika Balwani who has been doing well in the under-11,13 and 15 events. Delhi too has its
Sachika. It's Sachika Kumar Ingale, whose strong backhand is lethal enough to send little boys packing.
Sachika Kumar Ingale, 11, is living a family dream, of making her a national squash champion.
With all the signs of a star, and quite an accomplished one at that with bio-data including films and a dozen advertisements, Sachika has chosen a tougher road to stardom - the sporty road to success. ``But that's alright. I like doing both. I enjoy squash better,'' said
Sachika.
Brother Naeem, at 15, takes care of the morning jogging routine, while mother Ritu takes charge when it comes to hitting the gym. |
Her father, Wing Commander Vijay Ingale is no stranger to the world of squash, A Services player for 20 years, he is using his years of experience and knowledge to help his daughter polish her talent.
She has been lucky in ways. With a sponsor almost finalised, Sachika should hope to cash in on being able to participate in as many, and as big competitions to make her way, to the top.
Having won the Pathways All India junior inter-school squash competition in April , winner in the under-13 category and runner-up in the under-15, Sachika has the Sub-Junior Nationals in mind, to be held in Kolkata later this year in October. What gives her the edge over others in her category is ``the personalised attention and coaching plus her commendable grit and determination,'' according to her father. ``She enjoys her game, it motivates her to do other chores, complete homework for example,'' said Wg Cmdr Ingale.
He hopes, like Sachika herself, that a day comes when she would be feared and revered in equal portion. Sachika, like other yet-to-be-teens enjoys her movies, drawing and painting. She's also a stickler when it comes to animals, her pet poodle having come from the prize money she won at the Northern India Open in 2005.
With favourites like Joshna Chinnapa and Ritwik Bhattacharya, one does hope this firebrand of a player finds her place in the sun.

Nicol is the Champion |
|
|
Top seed Nicol David dethroned Rachael Grinham as the Qatar Airways Challenge champion in an enthralling final. It was anybody's game for the first two sets as they traded their full repertoire of shots, but when Nicol opened up an early lead in the third she never looked back.
"I learned from the first game as the match progressed," said the new champion. "I started to make her run around the court, and she started to feel it, I could sense her gasping for breath. The scoreline makes it look as if the last two games were one-sided, but it was much harder than that.”
Grinham was upbeat in defeat: "I still feel good, happy with my game, I just died in the end. Even in the third and fourth I felt in it at the start of the games but then I just stopped. "I've had some hard matches this week, my body needs to get used to playing three or four hard matches in a row, it's something I haven't done for a while.” |
