Wher Basics

Last Hope Weyr's Pern has two subspecies of Wher. The Watch Whers, and the Wild Whers. Below is some basic information about the two types of Wher.

Watch Whers These are the Whers from the books. Bright light bother's their sensative eyes, making them the most comfortable in dark places. This makes them perfect for watching over Holds at night. There are few same individuals that will tangle with a watch wher. What they have in physical power they lack in mental abilities. There intelligence is just above that of firelizards, but the creatures are obedient to a fault. They generally have evenly colored hides and gentle temperments towards their handlers. The term 'Watchers' is sometimes used to reference them.

Wild Whers These are the Whers that escaped their handlers in the early days of Pern settlement, and for a time they were left to prowl the Southern Continent unharressed by human kind. With the move of people back to the Southern Continent, Wild Wher's have become a source of awe. They sport a few important differences from their domestic cousins. While the Watch Whers are near blind in the daylight, wilds have shifting vision. One mode for daylight and one mode for night. However at dusk and dawn they are still blind. Their vision has the two modes only, the inbetween illumintion of twilight hours is beyond the capablities of both modes. They are highly intelligent, and will often question orders given to them by their handlers. They will turn on their masters if they are cruel or are deemed 'bad' by the wher. They have sleek frames, swift movement and agile reflexes. They often have patterned hides. The term 'Wilds' is sometimes used to reference them.
