Why should you have a vessel surveyed?

Most insurance companies and banks will require them for all vessels. They will need to know her condition and fair market value in order to finance and/or underwrite the vessel. Knowing her condition and fair market value before you purchase is also important. However, the most important reason to survey your vessel is for the safety of the passengers and crew.

What type of survey do you need?

Marine surveys are performed for a number of reasons, and the procedures for each vary to best suit your needs.

Pre-Purchase Survey: This is the most comprehensive survey, and is strongly advised when purchasing a new or used vessel. Pre-purchase surveys cover the hull integrity, propulsion system (sails, engines, auxiliary engines), fuel systems, electronic and electrical systems, navigation equipment, fire fighting systems, life saving gear, and other onboard equipment and systems. A pre-purchase survey also covers the cosmetic appearance and overall maintenance of the vessel in and out of the water, as well as sea trials.

Condition and Valuation Survey: This survey is performed so that the insurance company or lender can determine whether or not the vessel an acceptable risk. They are interested in structural integrity and safety for its intended use. Most insurance companies/lender require a survey on older boats, and want to know the vessels fair market value.

Damage Survey: This survey is performed to assess the extent of damage, recommended repairs, estimated repair cost, and if requested, possible cause.

New Construction Survey: New construction surveys are conducted on a progressive inspection schedule throughout the vessels construction. Inspection includes oversight of the hull construction (welding/planking/fiber glassing), installation of equipment, and cosmetic fit and finish of the vessel upon completion.

Vessel Management and Consulting: I provide management and consulting services in all aspects of vessel building, vessel operation, and vessel repair. This service is available for US Coast Guard certificated vessels and private vessels.

FEES

I quote fees based on individual circumstances of where the boat is located, the type of boat, and logistics required to complete the survey. Please call me with the particulars and I will be pleased to give you a quote.
