As a child, he excelled in track and field, but always had a love for baseball
When Roberto was seventeen, he played for the Santurce Cangrejeros in the Puerto Rican Winter League and attacted big-leauge scouts because of his many baseball skills
He signed with the Dogers for $10,000, but never played a game in Brooklyn or Los Angeles
When Roberto played for the Dogers, there was a rule that required players singed for more than $4,000 had to say on the parent club for a full season. The general manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates knew that Clemente wasn't playing so he signed Clemente for $4,000 on November 22, 1954
In 1955 he played his first Major League season with the Pittsburgh Pirates
In his rookie season he batted a .255 with five homers and 47 RBI's
In his sophomore season he batted a .311
For the next 12 seasons he batted above .300
During the 1960's Clemente was one of the top player in the National League.
