LIFESTYLE

Judging solely from the content of his films, it would be easy to assume that David Lynch views the world around him in a dark light. While it is true that he has had a “fascination with the forbidden, a sensitivity to hypocrisy tinged with melancholy” (Kaleta 2) since his childhood, the director appears to actually have a rather pleasant outlook on life. When asked about his art for instance, Lynch often speaks of splendor, not necessarily in what he created, but in art itself. Many of his works, be it his paintings, photographs, or even his sketches, share a similar feel to his films, managing to be surreal and dark while captivating and beautiful at the same time. Lynch could not be more passionate about his work, even dedicating a large amount of space in his Los Angeles home to it. He was quoted as saying that he is “…able to do almost everything at home…” and only has to shoot on location due to the fact that he is lacking the space to build sets (Charkalis D8). Aside from the generous areas devoted to his work, Lynch has dedicated areas of his home to meditation. He is an avid supporter of Transcendental Meditation, which is a program that is committed to helping people realize their potential through the use of meditation. He has been practicing it for 33 years and even set up his own foundation. The director promotes his foundation on his website alongside his own personal brand of coffee and his daily weather report. Lynch, who is synonymous with marketing himself, manages to use his website to promote himself quite well, even providing his own ringtones. However, the somewhat eccentric director can still manage an attention getting promotion without the aid of the internet. For instance, last year Lynch sat in a chair at a street corner in Los Angeles with a cow and large signs to promote his most recent movie Inland Empire (Keegan 134). It is quite obvious that Lynch, through his promotional techniques and many other aspects of his life, is not exactly conventional. click the "back" button to return to the homepage...
