Lay Your Weapons Down--April 1993

Scene 1:

The Springfield Inn where Buzz stays

Buzz: (Heading to his room) Can someone bring me up a 1/5th of Scotch, it's been one of those days

Manager: Mr. Mancini, about the young lady staying with you

Buzz: All right, scratch the Scotch, I don't need her slurping it down

Manager: Yes, but should we put her on file as being authorized to sign for your room service checks, she's been calling down for one thing and another, and we weren't quite sure

Buzz: (hands over face) Sure, great, do it Randi Hambi, don't look at me that way, that's the way she came named. (can hear piano in background and singing..."I'm going to love you like nobody's loved you, come rain or come shine...")

Manager: I might also remind you for the slightly higher rate for double occupancy.

Buzz:(listening to music) I don't believe it..

He walks into dining room where he sees Jenna warbling and writhing on the piano

Scene 2:

Buzz sits down and Jenna on top of piano serenades him with "Sooner or Later (You're Going To Be Mine)"and then works herself over to his table as she gets him all worked up, mouth agape.

Jenna: (after applause; to waiter) Well they don't really know what to make of me, do they?

Waiter:(smiling) Well, we've never really had the owner of a big corporation singing on the piano.

Jenna: Well, next time I'll brandish a cigar. (walks over to Buzz table and sits down) Whew....

Buzz: You're something.

Jenna:(chuckling) Huh, am I?

Buzz: Yeah, it's like Peggy Lee with a face and body transplant. I'm serious...this... this was good.

Jenna:(laughing) Well, I have to tell you the truth. I was terrified of singing in front of this crowd, but they actually looked terrified of me, probably half of them work for me.

Buzz: Well, when I said you were doing good, I partly meant that you're not sitting home doing your nails waiting for Mr. Thorpe.

Jenna: How do you know he's not sitting home doing his nails waiting for me?

Buzz: Only one thing can be uppermost in his mind at one time. Am I right? And sad to say, I happen to know, it isn't you.

Scene 3:

Jenna getting up and walking away

Buzz: Oh hey. Why are you so touchy all of a sudden?

Jenna: If you want to discuss my personal relationships, rather than having one, I'm sure you could find one person at every table who would love to join in.

Buzz: I was just trying to tell you that I knew where Roger was tonight and why he wasn't with you.

Jenna: Where?

Buzz: You know, you may call what you have a relationship, that's your business. But you know what it looks like to me? One of those jokers that walks up and down the street with one of those trick dog leashes that's all leash no dog.

Jenna: Where did you see him?

Buzz: Now, don't get your tear ducts all revved up. It wasn't another woman. He crashed an intimate dinner party at the Lewises, all in a lather because he thinks that Billy Lewis has his boy under his thumb.

Jenna: (smiling) Hmmm, Hart.

Buzz: Well Pancreas, I don't know, Gall Bladder, whatever you call him. He didn't look very thumb squashed to me.

Jenna: Hey, hey wait a minute. (catches Buzz's arm as he turns away) What kind of a man wouldn't be protective and worried about his son?

Buzz: Yeah, you're right. Rog has lots of things to do. But I would think that being second and third on his list all the time would take the shine out of it in the long run. I mean, dangling your legs off a baby grand, isn't a bad way to make yourself feel first in the room ..right now...but it's...well it's temporary

Jenna: Well (soft chuckle), sometimes it enough to know there's still firepower left in the old arsenal

Buzz: You ought to lay your weapons down and let the grass grow over them. (closes in on her) You ought to be first all the time and everywhere, that is your rightful place and you shouldn't have to fight for it. You should have someone in charge thinking of you and only you, from the first thing in the morning to the last thing at night. There ought to be somebody coming through that door with a telegram telling you you have lost all your money and you're not worth a cent; (gets close enough to kiss her) because then you'll see me looking at you in the exact same way, and making you mad the same way. And all the time there would be this one thought spinning around in my head like a fly, first thing in the morning and the last thing at night, that you are... gorgeous.... You're like a cloud or a waterfall in human disguise, and I want to...to take you... and look at you... all by myself....and never stop...

Jenna: Then why don't you?

Scene 4:

Buzz still close enough to kiss Jenna

Buzz: That would be taking advantage of you (kisses her palm)...Let's worry about that later. But in good conscience, I should warn you. You spend the night with me and your little arrangement with Mr. Thorpe will be spoiled forever, because you won't go back.

Jenna: That might not be such a bad...(he kisses her) Umm (still kissing) everyone's watching....

Buzz: Well..the only humane thing to do would be to go upstairs, before we short out their pacemakers. (starts to lead her out and see the manager) Um...

Jenna: What, what??

Buzz:(puts his arms around her) I don't want to do it in some sleazy motel room.

Jenna: It's not sleazy I used to stay here.

Buzz: Oh, you know what I mean...Petula.

Jenna: We can't very well go back to Roger's place...

Buzz: Oh (places hand on her neck while still holding her)...did he let you take the Jag tonight?

Jenna: Ahem....

Buzz: Come on...what...it's romantic, it's where we met.

Jenna: We are not doing it in Roger's car, you foolish man. Don't call me Petula...

Buzz:(singing) The lights are much brighter there (louder); You can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares (dances around her)...and go Downtown!!!!!

Jenna: (grabs Buzz laughing) Stop....

Buzz: Come on, we'll go to the Regency...it's swanky.

Jenna: Tomorrow, I'll buy a cottage on the Danube if you like. (he kisses her) But right now... I just want to be with you. (nuzzling each other) I don't mind going to your room, I really don't mind

Randi: (bellowing) Well, I mind...Petula

Jenna: Well, who the hell might you be?

Randi: I might be his wife (Jenna turns to Buzz)

Scene 5:

Jenna trying to leave the room

Buzz: (stopping Jenna) Ex-wife...ex, ex, ex, ex...she's just visiting for a few days.

Jenna:(to Randi) And where exactly would you be staying?

Randi: Where do you think? (Jenna glares at Buzz)

Buzz: Uh uh...I put her up here but she has her own room..

Jenna: Well at least she wasn't asked to do it in someone's car....(charges out of dining room)

Buzz: (running after her) hey, look...I am not married to that broad. She means nothing to me, less than nothing. Just a youthful mistake

Jenna: Oh really, when you married her did she have breasts yet?

Buzz: If I gave two hoots about her, would I be dragging myself in here to barricade the door.

Jenna: Don't try to con a con artist, my friend. When I first saw you I knew exactly what you were But somehow you made me forget how crude and obvious you obviously are. Now either you are very very good, or I'm just not much of a challenge am I? (Jenna leaves as Buzz looks on deflated)

Buzz: (looks at Randi) Shut up!!!

Randi: You let me sit up there like a chifferobe while you're down here picking up bar tarts?

Buzz: (lunges for her neck but stops himself) Why don't you sit at the bar and get pie-eyed? Maybe you'll get lucky and somebody will hit on you (Buzz marches off)

Scene 6:

Roger's Penthouse. Roger drinking and reading over Lewis Oil papers

Jenna: (comes in and sees Roger look up surprised) What?

Roger: I thought you were in there asleep.

Jenna: (wryly chuckling) You felt my presence.

Roger: I'm, uh, doing some work (looks back at his papers.

Jenna: (having a drink) Tell me...what does my absence feel like?

Roger: Agony.

Jenna: What was it you were doing?

Roger: Work....this is what my work looks like tonight...

Jenna: This is what I look like tonight. And that door over there, the bedroom door, that's what that looks like. This is me.... Jenna.

Roger: Must have been a rousing evening.

Jenna: Where...

Roger: (smiling) Where did you go?

Jenna: Downtown...the lights are a lot brighter there.

Roger: (gets up gives her a peck on the side of the mouth) I'll be in in a little while

Jenna: More work to do...

Roger: I'll be in in a little while

Jenna: I'll be breathing, that way you'll know I'm there...

She walks into bedroom and leaves a confused Roger behind.
