When GUIDING LIGHT was preparing to shoot an emotional series of scenes between Jenna Bradshaw and Buzz Cooper at an airport, they decided to leave the studio and actually film on location, at the Westchester County Airport, just north of New York City. The sequence, which aired January 13, gave the story an unbearably dramatic feel. And even though taping onlocation scenes is time-consuming, it was worth it for the audience. Under the leadership of GL executive producer Paul Rauch and director Bruce Barry, Fiona Hutchison (Jenna), Justin Deas (Buzz), a handful of extras and a crew headed to the tarmac to capture the essence of a real airport in the evening. They were required to shoot the scenes in the middle of the night, so as not to interfere with actual flight arrivals and departures. The shoot began at 11:30 p.m., after the airport had officially closed for the vening. The pressure was on to finish efore 5 a.m., when the airport would eopen for business. "We were upposed to start at midnight, but Bruce was right on target so we started 30 minutes early, which makes all the difference when you're shooting at night," explains Hutchison. "Bruce knew exactly what he wanted as far as shots and he's a very organized director. He's probably the most organized director that I've ever worked with," Hutchison continues. "Paul Rauch, who I've worked with on location many times before - down in Buenos Aires and Argentina (Rauch was formerly ONE LIFE TO LIVE's executive producer during Hutchison's tenure playing Gabrielle Medina) runs a very tight ship and sits in the control van watching as the shots are being done." Traditionally, special location shoots - especially those done in the middle of the night - have their fair share of troubles, but this one, says the actress, "was as smooth as glass." According to Hutchison, Mother Nature's cooperation was also greatly appreciated, as it was unseasonably warm for a winter in New York. "Thank goodness the weather held up", says the actress. "When fog came in, disaster almost struck, but it was still a success. It also helps when you click well with your co-star. "Justin is incredibly professional and very precise in what he wants to accomplish in a scene," Hutchison explains. "I just got swept up in the wake; it really was terribly easy to just do my thing." The on-location feel provided a perfect backdrop to GL's story - that of two people who love each other, but are caught up in complicated circumstances. When Jenna Bradshaw first landed back in Springfield, she had high hopes for a reunion with her old lover, Buzz Cooper. With her, she brought their son - a child Buzz never knew he had. What she didn't count on was seeing Buzz head-over-heels in love with another woman. Her hopes dashed, Jenna planned to leave town and her chances for a happily-ever- after behind her. "She decides that this is really not the thing to do, to come in and disrupt his life yet again," explains Hutchison. "She's basically licking her wounds and decides to head back to Europe where she's been-living." Meanwhile, Reva tearfully informs Buzz that can no longer continue their marriage, leaving her husband completely devastated. Ready to leave town himself, Buzz stops Jenna in her tracks - at the airport. "It's very much like 'Casablanca,"' agrees Hutchison. For Hutchison, who
is a brand-new mom, working into the wee hours of the morning came as second
nature. "I've been traveling and working since Hutch was six weeks
old, so I've been totally used to the schedule," she says. With Hutch
on location with her, Hutchison has managed it all rather gracefully.
"I'm breast feeding," she simply, "so even if I was home, I wouldn't be
getting much sleep anyway."
