here a bit of text say about the next aesthetic (or drama or story) and yet another "story" the aesthetic of motion and then here you are here you are a quote about and now a quote (for now) the observer effect in QM say jazz or fractals from Arthur C. Clarke The "walkway" -- a quote from Marcell Duchamp about assemblage etc and the marcell work would continue -- straight acrosss and more of duchamp and then the ideas about paint and canvas as just being "more of the same" 3.1415926535 8979323846 2643383279 5028841971 6939937510 5820974944 5923078164 0628620899 8628034825 3421170679 8214808651 3282306647 0938446095 5058223172 5359408128 4811174502 8410270193 8521105559 6446229489 5493038196 4428810975 6659334461 2847564823 3786783165 2712019091 4564856692 3460348610 4543266482 1339360726 0249141273 7245870066 0631558817 4881520920 9628292540 9171536436 7892590360

zix-preliminary design notes and artist's stmt

NOTE: SCATHING OPEN HONESTY IN THIS SECTION -- you have been warned; please refer to the character "Uncle Frank" in the film "Little Miss Sunshine" (more likely "Duane"). Well, as it turns out using the old stand by: If you can't dazzle them with your brilliance, then baffle them with your BS. So, i had been working on the "iconosphere" as my "Master Project" (in ATEC - arts & technology program, UTD). We don't do a thesis work - prob put two sentences together and prob has a clue as to how to due citations, references, and a bibliograph -- whoo wheee didn't i have fun with THAT last semester in my Ritual Studies class! i was finishing the "advanced proejcts" and then going to "whip it into shape" this summer, trim it up, etc and then try to put it into the show this fall (prob in the art barn -- i will for the explanitory note)... (rummages through files_..... The main thing was was that i was worried what kind of grades that i was going to get (visions of two D's and an F). (or maybe someone put in a good word for me to Mihai (our resident nobel prize winner -- not really, but then i'm just telling it "like it oughtah be", or Frank Dufour (our resident sound expert), or maybe Thomas Riccio (our resident experimental theatre guru, or it might have just been Col. Mustard in the Library with Ms. Scarlet, the candlestick, and a "certain duck" (in this case represented by a "certain sculptor"). SO, "in theory" i now have my MA -- at least as far as i can tell Anyway, assuming that i can now find *some* sort of employment - hopefully teaching or a research assistant (remembers how Thomas M. had to shave back his beard severly and then was decked out in v. nice threads. All, give a big round of applause to David McCoulough (my resident partner in crime -- abs fab show will try to post picture. I missed the poetry reading, just too tired (and worn out - just plain old worn out!). Anyway, onward!!! Oh yes, and in case didn't get a chance: https://www.angelfire.com/art3/fleeding/ma/index.html (release 0.1.0) (the version 0.1.0 of the iconosphere - which might be renamed "zix" in the near future) z^i^x (creativity to the power of imagination to the power of "x" -- the unknown). btw, the new zix will have a much "showier" and sculptural feel - think "Magical Mystery Tour" of "IDEA SPACE", etc ! -- Frank R.H. Leeding, MA (but not with out the paperwork!!!!) or the "artist formerly known as "The Poet 't' "). -- peace alwyas, ************ something passing for an "artist's statement" Orignally, i had in mind a much more traditional art work involved in using projectors, recorded vid/aud/stills/etc, and done as an installation work -- probably in the art barn. (My intention from the start was to complete the work and then "try it out" during this summer, and then perhaps get it into a show in the fall). Once i had started investigating this idea of the "iconosphere", it pretty much "took me over" -- i have *never* thought of text in this manner before. I'm being a bit more candid here than i usually am in my usual artist's statements; since i *always* like some mystery to remain as to the inner workings/life of any of my work. Regardless, the idea was (and always was) to put up something (even if incomplete or only a start - which is almost always the way with new works), and then get it "down to size" as it were and present it formally in a "art space". Mainly, my idea was to convert the supposedly "final" advanced projects into an "independent study". The current work is pretty much "as is" on the web site, and of course will need a bit more "filling" out. Another thing that prompted the change was that I had begun experimenting with the projectors and consdiering how to use them as well as some slide projectors (that i would have to borrow from some fellow artists) - thinking about what a hassel it would be got me to re-thinking a "text object" that i had done on paper with text and negative space; eg, drawing a tree with the branches being composed of text sentences that were forced into the contour of the drawing - very old stuff, but nice when done on a large scale (one version i had worked on was about 7' tall x 12' wide). Anyway, i'll be on the bus in a little while and should be out there this afternoon if you'd like to meet. Again, sorry about the mix up. I had gotten everyone's email off of the faculty list on the utd web site - in some cases (eg, Middori) there is NO listing at all; in which case, i have to resort to Google to find their mailing addr. Later, -- Frank. This was the original art work that i was proposing to do. As it turned out, getting all of the equipment (and where/how to set it up was a prob - remembering the "fun" we had moving "Never a Reference Point" from the (controled) UTD Theatre to the (vastly un-controlled, and far too dusty) Southside at Lamar resident didn't improve my desire to work this way). ============= Light, Shadow, Light ==================== Main Concept The main idea is that text is to be used as a sculptural element in the work. This goes back to the movie "Zardoz" where text is projected onto a human body, and hence the person becomes the canvas. The primary aesthetic is that as people move through the space into which the images (mostly text) are projected they move from light to shado and back again. I've seen things like this done before, but want to take it a bit further. The problem is that i've never personally done anything like this. At this point (taking a rather restricted view, but hope-ing to expand this into a larger version if time permits, or "the next time" - ie, version 2.0), the idea is get some projectors and begin experimenting with how this might work. I realise that "this is nothing new" - the worst epithet for *any* artist, but of course it would be new for me (as with my work last fall for the Art Barn show). And the idea is to bring something new to it (whih i have done before), and thus, *hopefully* acheive something "interesting". One key is to have moving text (or not, depending on how well it works - as well as letting the user/viewer control this). In addition (in keeping with the I/A ideas in ATEC, the idea would be able to pull up pages from a web site and display them. (I've already written a program that does the text patterns and it can be easily be adapted to a wide variety of ways to start/stop or even reverse the text displays; colour is another matter - will look into it later, but for now: Just black and white.) The problem of making the "on-line data" available presents a problem. It could of course be presented in the ATEC building in the "PC Game Lab" with the projection limited to the one wall (or a skrim could be hung, etc). But, then this would give EACH participant the opportunity to interact with a terminal - and a series of web pages that would present the images and text. This part is easy, since i would essentially create just a single page for each "still" and then have different over-lays of text here; eg, Barbara Kruger-like messages, or the usual multi-media posters (film adverts, etc) that we see so much of. This would tend toard the aesthetics of (eg) Andy Warhol, Kruger (again), Keith Harring, etc. Of course the problem comes if we decide that it can't be done in the ATEC lab - which, i can certainly understand: You really don't want a lot of loly gaggers strolling around yor terminals with sticky fingers ;). If the ART Barn is used then this presents a probelm with web access. Of course, this means probably losing the on-line access ability. But, then of course that the work would be self contained. That an of the "on-line" stuff, would have to be downloaded (duplicated) to at least an extent that the user would have a *feeling* of something like the on-line experience. mean that it would have to be "on-line". Something to think about. That's pretty muh it. The content of the text would be of several natures: Images (but usually not too distracting - almost to the point of so boring as to be ignored by the viewer). Text (the main star) - art history, art criticism, tech talk, (i would like to maybe even include stuff from the original Zardoz moview or possibly Star Trek, but i'm already running into probs with "publishing rights" as it is. Hopefully, it would be an interesting experience - the standard has already been set, so i guess this will see if i'm "up to the challenge" -- yegads, i hate competition! That's pretty much it. -- Frank.
