The legal system affects nearly every aspect of our society, from buying a home to crossing the street. Lawyers form the backbone of this vital system, linking it to society in numerous ways. For that reason, they hold positions of great responsibility and are obligated to adhere to a strict code of ethics. Lawyers, also called attorneys, act as both advocates and advisors in our society. As advocates, they represent one of the parties in criminal and civil trials by presenting evidence and arguing in court to support their client. As advisors, lawyers counsel their clients concerning their legal rights and obligations and suggest particular courses of action in business and personal matters. Whether acting as an advocate or an advisor, all attorneys research the intent of laws and judicial decisions and apply the law to the specific circumstances faced by their client. |

Singers go through years of rigorous training, practice and study in voice production, melody, harmony and rhythm. They're usually classified according to their voice range: soprano, contralto, tenor, baritone or bass, or by the type of music they sing, such as opera. They perform in operas, musicals, choral groups, concerts, nightclub acts, movies, television or radio. Singers spend most of their time taking lessons, practicing and rehearsing. Their most important qualifications are a good voice and musical sense. "You need to get as much training and background as early as possible to be successful in this field," says David Wilson, a professor of music at the University of Southern California. There are several ways to become a singer. Some start in a church or with a small band. They perform wherever they can just to gain valuable experience. "You need to get started at a young age. I would encourage potential singers to take piano to develop their musicianship. This is because it helps them to learn music more quickly," says Wilson. Singers can advance from unknown amateurs to highly paid professionals, but this takes plenty of talent, hard work and sound career guidance and management. According to opera singer Marylou Basaraba, the earlier a hopeful singer gets started, the better. "Finding a good teacher for young voices is critical. Professional singing requires a high level of musicianship. You need to be able to read music, have an understanding of the different periods of music, you need piano skills, and for opera, you need to be proficient in a foreign language," says Basaraba. Advancement is tough for opera and concert singers and easier for music teachers. There are very few jobs in opera, while there are many more open positions available for teachers. Despite the years of training and the constant scrambling for work, most professional singers wouldn't trade their work for anything. "It's not a job -- it's absolutely something you have to do. It's a passion for the music and a love of performing that motivates most people," says Basaraba. |
