Silent Passage

Grizzled derelict staggers

Down Missouri railroad tracks

Paroxysms of laughter bubbling

From his rotund belly

November wind whistling in the treetops

Each step a solitary moment

Etched in the crimson blood-light

Of a dying sun

Icy breeze seeps through fortress layers of wool

Gloveless fingers petrifying into wooden stiffness

Numbness spreading from toes like a creeping fog

Teeth chattering like woodpecker

Stars emerging from the Velvet blue vault of heaven

Like a ship lost in an Arctic sea

A stranger in his own land

He feels the slippage of time

Like a train whistle passing

As it fades into the wind

Traveling further on this voyage into non-being

Subsiding pain leaves euphoria in its wake

Tingles of pleasure crackle through his body

Like smoldering coals

Illusion of warmth soothes his fears

Path through eternity stretches out ahead

In infinite golden vistas

Fallen angel lays prostrate on back

Gazing into the depths of space

Mystery of void beckoning him like a liberation

As eyes glaze into crystalline frost

Stars fragmenting

Into thousands of dancing diamonds of light

Flash of white light brilliant as fire of creation

Atomic fireballs

Illuminate the night of the apocalypse

A thousand suns burning with unquenchable fire

Mind dissipating into hazy clouds of oblivion

Cycle of life completed
