GIGS: John Surman
Quartet - 1
December 2006, CBSO
Centre,
With all its
members now actively involved elsewhere, it does not appear as a group all that
often, but its concert to celebrate the 30th anniversary season of Birmingham
Jazz showed its perfect inner balance and mutual interdependence is still
beyond compare on the British jazz scene.
Its repertoire
slips from open, freely improvised playing, such as the opening number, with Surman's corkscrewing soprano saxophone phrases backed by
snarling bowed bass and jingling chimes to the English pastoral landscape of
lyrical compositions such as Tess or Hay Wain. Surman's dainty tripping
saxophone theme and Taylor's sinister piano chords created light and shade over
the Latin feel of La Calada , whereas Line One, Part
2 slid into a bluesy groove with Marshall's snare drum backbeat and sonorous
cymbals reminding us he was the powerhouse behind such fusion bands as Nucleus
and Soft Machine.
Even the
through-composed pieces were played with a freedom and spontaneity that showed
how the group listens and reacts immediately to one another's ideas. An
upwardly moving bass figure in one tune was instantly caught by the soprano
saxophone, and a few moments later mirrored on the piano. A nod from Surman could change the group's
tempo in a split
second, and his tiny thematic fragments were
picked up and developed thoroughly by the other members.
Most fascinating
was the way
John Watson in the Express
and Star: “Fire Still There in Thrilling Quartet: To describe the playing of
saxophonist John Surman as powerful is to risk understatement - in his hands
the instrument has sometimes seemed volcanic.
This was well
demonstrated in this performance by Surman, who appeared with long-established
partners John Taylor on piano, Chris Laurence on bass and drummer John
Marshall.
Surman's playing has mellowed over the years, but he
showed all his old fire when he brought the concert to a thrilling climax with
one of his earlier compositions - a twisting, fast-paced theme for soprano sax
simply called Number Six. The group's
interplay had been impressive for this concert, but in this particular work the
quartet produced a fierce firestorm of sound.
Surman's creations on the baritone and soprano
saxophones - and also on the bass clarinet can also convey the most tender
emotions, with wisps of sound that are all the more effective by being
understated.
His recordings for
the German label ECM have won critical acclaim for decades. He can present a broad palette of musical
colours, and his compositions encompass not only the wilder shores of jazz but
also English folk music, Indian scales and Scandinavian tonal bleakness.”
(Thanks to Alan Carter for these reviews).
