Freshwater “REDCLAW” Lobster

The Redclaw can make an excellent addition to any size aquarium. Although they can attain sizes of up to 1lb., when raised in captivity they will rarely grow larger than ¼ lb. They are fine for beginner aquarists as they can tolerate a wide range of water quality and don’t require any specialized feeds.

The Redclaw as an aquarium pet is a relatively docile bottom feeder and cleaner. It’s diet consists mostly of vegetables; frozen peas, lettuce, zucchini etc. The larger Redclaw can become predacious. If keeping larger Redclaw it is not advised to mix small fish in the tank (ie. Tetras, Mollies, Guppies, etc.) unless you don’t’ mind loosing the occasional one to predation. We do not recommend feeding the Redclaw a diet solely based on pelletized feed, as it tends to foul the tank with the uneaten portions.

To properly keep Redclaw you will also need to supply at least one good hiding spot per animal. This can be in the form of a sunken pipe, hollow log, or anything that will allow them to seek shelter. This is their natural instinct and without it they tend to have a shortened lifespan.

Redclaw can also be escape artists and we recommend all tanks have a lid. Anything hanging over the side of the tank can be a possible escape route. The animals will climb up airlines hanging in the tank if not properly covered.

Redclaw colors can vary from a yellow brown to an electric blue. As the Redclaw mature, they usually develop a blue body with light yellow mottling. As the males mature they will develop a bright red patch on the outside of their claws, making it easy to determine sex.

Currently in the U.S. there is a very limited quantity of Redclaw and most are being sold for broodstock or into the aquarium trade, as the price reflects. In their native country of Australia there is an increasing number of aquaculture facilities growing them out for a food product. With reports of upwards of 2,000 lbs. per acre yield and the meat being very similar in taste and texture to lobster we are very interested in exploring it’s potential as an aquaculture species in the south east U.S.
