In Loving Memory of Shadow Boo-Bear McKelvey 2000? to June 15th 2010 dx Stage 3 multicentric lymphoma July 10th 2009 Steve's beloved Belgian Sheepdog mix (or maybe even purebred?) 
My handsome boy! Shadow passed from this world to the next at about 3 pm this afternoon, surrounded by friends and neighbors who turned out to support me and give their love to Shadow one last time. Considering the sad occasion, a person couldn't have asked for a better experience, to be enveloped by the generous lovingkindness of others-- all dog owners and/or lovers-- as I made the very, very difficult decision to let my friend go. Though I consider myself an agnostic, I want very much to believe that there is something after this life. And that that Paradise is not reserved solely for humans, but welcoming of all living creatures, from beloved pets like Shadow, to the saddest and most abused animals, whose lives on this Earth are sheer hell. Thank you to those of you who have been kind enough to send messages of support throughout these past 11 months of giving Shadow additional, good-quality life, courtesy of chemotherapy. Besides some relatively mild and brief side effects a few days after a monthly treatment, I'm so grateful to recall just how vibrantly alive and happy he was throughout, up until the past few days. I'm thinking of you, Shadow, and will love you always. Thank you for giving me the honor of being your "Dad" these past six years. I was very lucky to have you in my life. And thank you for your last gift: running down to the end of the road-- making sure the way is safe-- and waiting for me to catch up, my friend.
