Introduction:

Biometric is defined as the ability to measure, store and use personal traits and unique characteristics.  The word biometric is derived from two Greek’s words “bios” and “metron”.  Characteristics identification through the use of technology occurs when there is positive and accurate match of a person’s traits from a database in a process called “one to many” principle.

The Armed Forces organizations may face the same issues when applying biometric tools.  Security being at the top of the list.  The answer may rest on the capability gained versus what is given out.

HLS has been also working on security opportunities based on biometric information.  The office ultimate purpose is to secure our borders and apprehend criminal or terrorist desiring to enter the U.S.  The system have processed more than 61M people applying for admission to the US where close to 1,200 criminals have been intercepted.  The system is named Visitor and Immigrant Status Indicator Technology (US-VISIT).

Fingerprint scanner and smart card scanner systems which prevent unauthorized access to computers are the key in the protection of data and information. The industry can now provide many variants of fingerprint technology.  Other technologies such as "eye readers" promise added security. However, would an eye surgery impact biometric technology and its ability to properly identify people's traits?  This presentation will lead you to find the answer on your own.
