
This is the White-headed Munia (Lonchura
maja). Size 11 cm (4.5 in). White
head and upper breast contrasting sharply with chestnut plumage. Bill bluish
grey. It is found in the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java and Bali and
resident from low elevation up to 300 m, south to Singapore. Usual habitat
include open grassland, ricefields and gardens.
Like other munias, gathers in large flock feeding on seeds. Also associates
with other munias foraging for food. It is nowhere as common as it once used
to be.
