The British Aerospace Hawk is a two-seat attack and advanced trainer aircraft. 10 Hawk 100s have been delivered to the RMAF and are based at Butterworth with 15 Skuadron. One has been lost in an accident.
Development
It started when the Hawk T.1 trainer first flew in August. These early Hawks had 3 hardpoints for weapon training. In 1983, 88 of these were modified to a back-up, point defence fighters with the ability to carry a pair of AIM-9 Sidewinders and a 30mm Aden gun pod. These aircraft were designated Hawk T.1As. Next followed the Series 50 upgrade/ The Series 60 upgrade introduced a Mk 861 Adour engine, an new wing with additional leading-edge fences and revised flaps. The Hawk 100 is a Hawk 60 with a new combat wing and other weapon anovics.
Malaysian Hawk 100s
On 10 December 1990, 10 two-seat Hawk Mk 108s and 18 single seat Hawk Mk 208s for a £400 million deal. The Hawk 100s operated by the RMAF has two more hardpoints than the previous models. Its new, longer nose can house optional FLIR or laser sensors. Its cockpit is more advanced than the others, equipped with MFDs and HOTAS (Hands On Throttle And Stick) plus more attack-optimised avionics. Although use to train future Hawk 200 or F/A-18 pilots, the Hawk 200 can be used for ground attack in the event of an emergency, crewed by instructers.
