    ~ Week One ~

    ~ Lifeboats ~

KLA: Fillers/ Mathematics game for Area
Stage: Early Stage One, One, Two and Three
Outcomes: Children will learn the importance of experimentation and compromise as well as strive to develop strategies to achieve success.
    Resources: Five sheets of newspaper.

Procedure: The five sheets of newspaper are laid on the ground in various places in the playing area. Explain to the children that the sheets of newspaper are lifeboats and the area around them is shark infested waters. The children start to skip around the pieces of newspaper while the teacher clicks. When the teacher stops clicking, this is the signal for the children to find space on one of the lifeboats (sheets of newspaper). This means that no piece of their body should be touching the carpet. At first, the children should easily find some space on the lifeboats, but with each new turn, a lifeboat (sheet of newspaper) is taken away. The game continues and for those children who are unable to find space sit out of the playing area and observe the other groups. The game continues until there is only one sheet of newspaper. See how many children can fit onto that piece of paper in the last round.

Variations: Use hoops if there is no newspaper available. You can also use music to indicate when children are to stop and start the game.
