Your Valentine

Your Valentine

Joan Miessau

Yes, Dear,
your grandpa in his youth
Once loved a maiden fair,
With pearly teeth and rosy cheeks,
Blue eyes and auburn hair;
And though this maid was quite petite,
Your grandpa's heart did quail...
He stammered when he spoke to her,
at times his speech would fail.

Your grandma learned to love this youth--
She'd felt Dan Cupid's dart,
But how on earth was he to know
He'd won the maiden's heart;
And that's just why Saint Valentine
Did set aside a day
When lovelorn youths may tell in verse
The words they dare to say.

Your grandma did await the day,
Then this is what he wrote...
"Oh! maiden fair, with the auburn hair,
I send you this short note,
To let you know I love you so
And that my heart is thine,
And on this day I hope you'll say
You'll be my Valentine."

Your grandma sent the selfsame day
A dainty little note,
Which made your grandpa blithe and gay
For this is what she wrote....
"Oh! Billy, Dear,
your note is here,
I've read it line by line,
And this I'll say without delay,
"I'll Be Your Valentine".
