Well, this has been a crazy week. Particularly the first two days.
On Monday, my FYS prof (teaches religion/philosphy I think) came into the office where I work and said, "Oh, you work here? How many hours do you do? I'd like to hire you for work-study. Oh, 10 hours. Well, maybe next semester?" I kind of said, "Maybe" and left it at that. Now I'm not like insulted or anything, I'm flattered, but I'm also puzzled. Why would he want to hire me for work-study? Why does he think I'd be good as his work-study student helper?
I was going to have a psych test at 8 AM on Tues morning, so the night before, I set my alarm. People were making noise in the hall, so I put in earplugs and went to sleep. Not too terribly long after something woke me up. I realized it was the people in the hall. Now, if they woke me up when I was wearing earplugs, they must have been pret-ty loud. So I rolled over to put on my glasses to go out and ask them to be quiet, and my clock was blank. The electricity had gone out, and they were having a power-outage party in the hall, apparently right outside my door. They kept cheering whenever someone opened their door. So I ended up not asking them to be quiet. This was about 12:30, I think, and the electricity didn't come back on until about 12:45, after which time everybody got really quiet because they were so tired. Some girls were late for class the next morning because their alarms had turned off. Come to find out, this power outage was PLANNED! It was planned for Tues night, and they were going to turn out the electricity to fix something. They were going to do it at midnight so it wouldn't screw anything up, and they were going to send out a campus-wide email telling everybody. Well, it ended up happening Monday night instead and NOBODY got an email. I've said it before and I'll say it again, COMMUNICATION ON THIS CAMPUS SUCKS WORSE THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE. Plus, how are people supposed to reset their alarms even if they know that the electricity is going out at 12 AM? Knowing about it a day before will not give them enough time to run to the store and buy batteries.
I don't know whether this is related, but all day Tuesday and most of Wednesday, we had no internet. Campus email still worked b/c we're on a network, but no in-going or out-going email and no net. It took them that long to get it fixed! What if somebody needed to do research on the net for a paper that was due Wednesday? And some girls lost papers they were working on when the power went off. The little email explaining the power outage situation had a little line at the bottom about saving your work periodically just in case, which, although it's good advice at any time, was entirely tactless because it was shifting the blame for losing their work to the students themselves when it was not their fault.
I think I did pretty well on the psych test though, so I'm okay. Even with all the interruptions in my sleep the night before...
Tuesday at work, my boss was telling me about all the trouble she got for putting a Kerry/Edwards sign in her lawn. I agreed with what she was saying, but I couldn't help thinking when she said, "You know, most of the people around here are Republicans", SHE THINKS I'M A DEMOCRAT! Now how on earth did she get that idea?
I mentioned to her that I'd love to have a good old-fashioned masquerade party, with the unmasking time and everything, but that I didn't have the space or the time to pull one together, and she goes, "I have space! We could have it at my house!" So maybe we're going to get together this winter and hold a masquerade party! Only prob is, it's a girl campus. No guys. *sigh*
Liz has taken to trying to scare Megan (my roommie) out of her wits. She keeps startling her. It's really funny. Then she and Dana hid in the closets of two of their friends to scare them. It apparently didn't work. The original plan was to hide under their beds and reach out and grab their ankles, but under the beds was too messy. We told Liz that if she ever did that to us, after we were done having myocardial infarctions, we were going to KILL HER.
So yeah, now it's Friday, and I'm all dressed up for Halloween. Liz is dressed up as Jack Sparrow! I'll post photos tomorrow. Later!
Liz! "CAPTAIN. CAPTAIN Jack Sparrow!" Ooh! Spooky Mac 2nd! Jack and his gypsy wench. Hopefully this one won't slap him; when she stands up in those boots she's 6'1"! ...as you can see. People kept asking what I was... I taught my little cousin Kelsey something, though. She asked what I was, and I said, a midieval lady, and she said, what's that, and I told her, someone who lived in Europe a long time ago. I later heard her explain it to her sister.
