Our Watery World - Under the Sea

Welcome to Our Watery World. This site is designed to introduce you to some basic facts regarding the wonders of the sea, specifically coral reefs, and the fish that live in these wondrous environments. Did you know that without oceans there would be no life on land? In fact, almost three-fourths of the Earth's surface is covered with water. The oceans contain roughly 97% of the Earth's water supply.

Oceans serve many functions such as affecting the weather and temperature. The always-moving ocean currents distribute heat energy around the earth. Oceans provide land animals with oxygen and food. For more interesting "quick facts" about our oceans, click on the clown fish.

Did you know that until the year 2000, there were four oceans: the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, and the Arctic Ocean. In the Spring of 2000, a new ocean called the Southern Ocean (surrounding Antarctica)was recognized by the International Hydrographic Organization.

Even though the oceans are connected, the conditions are not the same everywhere. Water temperature, the depth of the water, and the amount of sunlight are some of the factors that determine the kinds of living things found in the various oceans on Earth. One of the most interesting living environments under the sea are coral reefs. Coral reefs are some of the oldest and most fragile ecosystems on our planet.
