Welcome!

Welcome to Aunt Lu’s Pond!  We hope you enjoy your visit!

Aunt Lu’s pond was dug in April of 2003 and is currently entering it’s third season It was originally 700 gallons and was constructed from a Becket pond kit purchased from Home Depot. For the first season we built a filter similar to Vince Lauria’s wal-mart filter.  It worked well and kept the water clear for most of the season.

The 2004 season brought change in the filtration. We wanted to have a waterfall/stream, so we decided to change over to a skippy filter. We also added gravel around the pond in 04’.  This is an idea I am now scratching my head over and saying “What was I thinking?”. Since we are now making the pond larger all of that gravel must now be shoveled out.

For the 2005 season we decided that our fish are outgrowing their happy home and have since torn out the old liner and have commenced digging.  The pond now measures 15’ x 10’ x 3’ and is approximately 2200 gallons.  It has 2 plant shelves that step down into the 3’ area. The top shelf will be for marginals and the second shelf for the water lillies.

Our fish include 3 koi, 3 comets, 2 shubunkins, and around (30) 3 year old mutts. For the past couple of seasons the fish have overwintered in a 100 gal. rubbermaid stock tank without any difficulty.  This was due to the fact that the pond was only 1.5 deep and froze solid in the winters past.  This year they should be able to stay outside for the winter.

Feel free to browse though the photos and links.  Most of the photos at this time are from the 2003 & 2004 ponding season as things are just gearing up here for the 2005 season. Happy ponding!
