German 1 (GER 0531)

German 1 is designed to acquaint the beginning students with the sounds and pronunciation of the German language, and to develop the ability to understand, speak, read, and write German on a simple but functional level.  To lay this foundation, the teacher uses a combined communicative and grammatical approach to the language.  Students learn about geography, customs and culture of the German-speaking countries.  To achieve these goals, students will use the text Deutsch Aktuell I together with associated visuals, worksheets, and audio- and videotapes.

German 2 (GER 0532)

The second level of German language study expands on the groundwork skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  Students increase their knowledge of grammar and vocabulary in patterned drills and structured conversations.  They gradually learn to use German to express their own feelings and thoughts.  Continued use of authentic texts and audiovisuals helps develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the German civilization.  Deutsche Aktuell 2 is used to achieve these goals, together with associated videotapes.  An increased use of German in the classroom is fostered.

German 3 (GER 0533)

The third level course prepares the students to use German on a more advanced level.  More complex aspects of grammar are introduced and reinforced by means of written and spoken exercises.  Reading and converstaion require the use of more advanced vocabulary and idioms.  Extensive use of supplementary materials increases conversational and reading proficiency.  German is used more extensively.  The text used at this level is Unsere Welt.
