The Mississippi Mudcats were given a very fine opportunity to succeed, at least as far as scheduling. The team began the year with four straight home games and six of their first seven games at home. After an 8-0 start, the Mudcats began to struggle on the road. The team earned a home playoff game against Tallahassee and defeated the financially strapped Titans, 62-32. The road woes continued in the semifinals at Lakeland, however, as the Mudcats gave up a team record 84 points in an 84-62 loss to the eventual champions. Tommy Jones led the Mudcats again in 2008. The Mudcats again dominated, going 13-1 in the regular season. However, Tommy Jones left for the Intense Football League prior to the playoffs. Aries Nelson led the team into the postseason. His first test was the Columbus Lions, the only team to beat Mississippi in 2008. The Lions took a 40-19 halftime lead and led 43-25 in the fourth quarter. However, the Mudcats pulled off one of the most unlikely comebacks in indoor football, with a 52-50 victory. Despite having a better record than Wyoming, the Mudcats played on the road at the Cavalry and got destroyed, 54-26. Nelson was held to just two passing touchdowns and one rushing.
