Peter Gammons' Diamond Notes
By Peter Gammons
AWBL Analyst

- After fourteen games, Number 1 overall draft pick Marc Lantz has batted a measly 25 times. After two weeks, he was on pace to shatter the batting average record by over 100 points, but now that cannot happen because he won't reach the minimum number of at-bats. A one time gold glover, Latnz has not played in over a month and his team is slumping without him.

- For the first time this year, the record book will be changed. When Mike Foster swung and missed for strike three in the bottom of the second inning during a week 6 game bettween Team Blose and Team Barilar, Joey Troupe broke Jeff Dean's single season record for strikeouts, which was eight, with his ninth K of the year. It was Foster's first strikeout of the year.

- Repeating his great week 5 performance, Dustin Guidash continued to produce, carrying his team in both games during week 6. Although he missed week 7, he improved his batting average to .591 and is leading the league in that category for the first time in his career. Guidash is starting to play eerily similar to last year, when he took over the AWBL in the second half and led his team to the championship. With six real good games, he could break the batting average record and help his team to a good playoff seeding.

- Matt Stookey started week 6 with a bang, four for four with four homeruns and six RBIs. He looked to be on pace to break the single game records for homeruns and RBIs, but he cooled off and only reached base once in his final twelve at-bats of week 6. Despite falling apart, he pitched well in two appearances and should have a case to get playing time.

- Stat of the week: Team Homeruns
Team Guidash - 83
Team Barilar - 70
Team Blose - 64
Team Means - 45

- Talk about a long day, Harp had the same amount of at-bats in one day as 1st and 2nd rounders Marc Lantz and Jay Neal have this season...combined.

- Stookey needs some runners to get on ahead of him, 17 HRs to lead his team but only 22 RBIs.

- Still the only drafted AWBL player to never swing a bat, Dustin Davis.

- Adam Miloser's new batting stance, "the ADD stance", has rejuvenated his season. He's on the rise in the MVP race and is hitting better than he has his entire career. He is finally proving why Blose took him 3rd overall, ahead of AWBL studs Joe Martin and Andy Divelbiss.

- If Stookey continues putting up big numbers, he could make a run at Ronnie Walker for Rookie of the Year.

- Will Harp be on the trading block soon? He's struggling for playing time for Team Barilar, but when he gets a chance produces big time for a 7th rounder and teams like Team Means could use his big bat.

- On the down side for Team Blose, second round pick Jeff Dean is hitting a league low .281 and is on pace to hit 28 HR... less than he did in 2001. ('01:34, '02:6)

- Why has Team Barilar been so hot lately? A league high .537 team BA could be the reason. They have a base runner every other at-bat, which ensures 4 at-bats an inning, and almost a run an inning because they average an extra-base hit every 3.1 at-bats. Incredible.

- Picking up Kayla McGee could be more than just a move to improve Team Blose's place in the standings, it could be a publicity move. With playoff time around the corner, the only female in AWBL history could draw a fan base and give Team Blose some extra incentive to win.

- David Zimmerman and Matt Dinger are still at a complete deadlock for most improved player after 14 games. Zimmerman has a slight lead in batting categories, but Dinger's pitching has been huge to Team Barilar. He has become the ace of the staff although he scheduled to be a reliever this season.

- The RABL still wants to play an interleague game against the AWBL. Within the next few weeks, expect an AWBL All-Star team to face the likes of Johnny Barenchik, Andy Snyder, and Zach Brink, if their moms will drop them off.

- With six games left, Team Barilar will have to finish undefeated to match their league best 14-6 record of '01.

- Mike Foster's new "shotput pitching" has only raised his E.R.A considerably and helped him to pick up three losses. At first considered a tactic of distraction, now he finds himself watching his pitches hit the roof more often than not. On a team looking to make a late playoff surge, Team Blose could use Foster out of the bullpen if Blose continues pitching well and Miloser returns to '01 form.

- A new record was established week 7, most players without shirts on. At one point, 8 players were topless and catching the rays from the May sun.

- Conversation topic for those who read the Diamond Notes, which is a worse reason to miss a game? Homework or doing something with your girlfriend even though you're with her every other day of the week.

- Three players cracked the career 50 HR plateau this week, Andy, Fetus, and Barilar.

- AWBL President Fetus announced this week that the last three weeks of the season will all be promotion weeks. Ideas for promotion such as "Turn Back the Clock Week" will be open for suggestion, just contact the league office.
