HE WAS ONLY 18

(C) 2001 By Glenda Lou Martin

He was only 18
When he answered the call.
He left home and family
And a girl he called "Poll".

He made it through basic.
He grew lean and strong.
"You're going to the Infantry, son
To prove your brawn."

To the front lines he went
Fighting with all his might.
Believing he was doing it
For freedom and right.

And then it happened.
He gave a loud shout.
A bullet tore through him
His life was in doubt.

A mother's nightmare was coming true.
The telegram said they should be proud.
He died with honor, true to his call.
He gave all he had, a hero unbowed.

He was only 18
As they stood at his grave.
In the land of the free
And the home of the brave.

Dedicated to all the men and women who gave their all in the service of our country. God bless them, and God bless America!
