A REPORT ON THE SUGAR CREEK TRIP By Irene Manko
  • We had a pleasant trip to Amish Country on October 6, 2001,taking in the scenery and learning a few things about the Amish people. Our first stop on our trip to Sugar Creek, Ohio, was at Warther’s Carving where we saw an amazing display of hand-carved wonders. Ernest Warther’s hobby was carving trains. The trains were carved in various woods, ivory and ebony. We also got to view Mrs. Warther’s large button collection (over 73,000), which were displayed in various design patterns.
  • Next, it was on to lunch at the Dutch Valley Restaurant where we ate a family-style meal which included beef, chicken, salad, stuffing, mashed potatoes, creamed corn, and dessert. It was delicious.
  • We then went to the town of Charm where we visited the Guggisberg Cheese Store, which is the “Home of the Original Baby Swiss.” Then, it was off to Coblenz Candy and another stop at Miller’s Bakery where we all bought baked goods to take home. The store was non-electric, so everything was powered by gas.
  • The last stop was at the Breitenbach Winery where we sampled various grape, fresh fruit, and berry wines. With the bus loaded down with all our purchases, it was off to Pittsburgh for a pleasant ride home.
  • A special thanks to Judy for organizing the trip and giving some wonderful memories and to Sue Booritch for our Halloween surprise bag. We all had a good time.
