ESL Program Overview

The ESL teacher, working with students, parents, classroom teachers, guidance counselors, and administrators, will implement various strategies to ensure that the above expectations are fulfilled.

Statement Regarding Academic Support

Due to language limitations, it is expected that the ESL student will need extra assistance in completing academic tasks, particularly in language concentrated areas such as English, reading, and social studies. The ESL teacher will be available to adapt classroom project and tests, as well as design study guides to ensure the highest level of classroom comfort. Please feel encouraged to distribute tests and project guidelines to the ESL teacher in advance so adapted materials can be appropriately prepared.

Unfortunately, the amount of time the ESL teacher can spend with each student does not allow for extensive academic support during ESL sessions. Here are some additional suggestions to help make a student's classroom experience meaningful and enjoyable.

  • Keep student within close proximity during lessons.
  • Assign peer buddies to assist students during independent/seat work.
  • Provide opportunities for individual attention (ex. Parent tutors, high school volunteers, etc.)
  • Repeat directions and provide visuals as often as possible.

    Remember
A student acquiring a second language will take 1-2 years to acquire basic conversational skills, but it may take 7-10 years for a student to acquire full cognitive academic proficiency in their second language.
