Dr. Dre Impressed By D12's Defiant Attitude

D12's debut Devil's Night has achieved gold sales status after just two weeks on the Billboard 2000 album chart. The album, featuring group members Eminem, Kuniva, Kon Artis, Proof, Swifty McVeigh, and Bizarre, features production from Dr. Dre on "Ain't Nuttin' But Music," "Nasty Mind," "Fight Music," and "Revelation."
Dre tells LAUNCH that he enjoyed working with the group because of their defiant attitudes. "I actually flew out to Detroit, and worked with them," he says. "I did four songs that are on the album and the D12 album is out of here. It's ridiculous. If you haven't like been able to tell already, I like the crazy, wild sh-t. The crazier the better. I like music that's on the edge and something that's going to be different, and people that are not afraid to say something that most people just think about. Just go on and make it wild. It's just for entertainment. That's all it is, is entertainment, and I love it."

Dr. Dre wins Lawsuit Posted Thursday, April 26, 2001 by webmaster
Dr. Dre has settled his suit against accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, in which the superstar producer/rapper claimed the company had cost him tens of millions during his time at Death Row Records.

Dre's camp contends that while he was busy producing some of the biggest hip-hop records of the '90s, his accountants allowed others to loot money from his accounts and then participated in diverting those funds to other PWC clients. The suit accused PricewaterhouseCoopers of fraud and breach of contract of fiduciary duty.

A confidentiality agreement forbids either side from revealing details of the settlement, but a source said the firm paid Dre around $15 million to settle the case, which was scheduled to go to trial April 30.

Steve Silber, spokesperson for PricewaterhouseCoopers, said the suit was settled "in a matter that was satisfactory to both sides."

The suit was filed in 1997, but proceedings were slowed because the partner in charge of Dre's account, Steve Cantrock, refused to testify in the case, according to Dre's lawyer, Howard King.

Marion "Suge" Knight — who co-founded Death Row with Dre and still heads the label — and Death Row's lawyer, David Kenner, took the Fifth as well.

A companion case brought by Snoop Dogg against the firm was settled last year.

Dr. Dre Speaks Posted Saturday, February 24, 2001 by webmaster
The music industry was split on how controversial rapper Eminem could win all the attention and yet lose the big prize at the Grammy Awards.Could it be that the 13,000 voting members of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS) found his lyrics on women and gays misogynistic and homophobic and therefore not deserving of a coveted album of the year award? Or could it be that they felt it was not his turn and gave him the same sort of treatment meted out to such cutting edge performers as Bob Dylan, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones when they were young.Dr. Dre, the rap artist, mentor and music mogul who produced Eminem's hit album ``The Marshall Mathers LP,'' says that even though Eminem won three other awards, he was robbed of the big prize which instead went to music veterans Steely Dan for their album ``Two Against Nature.''``To be perfectly honest, I think we were robbed,'' Dre told the Access Hollywood program in an interview to be aired Thursday. He speculated that the Grammy voters did not give Eminem the album of the year prize because of the controversy his nominations engendered. ``It was probably something the Grammys had to do because of the backlash that they were going to get from giving him the award,'' Dre said.

Dr. Dre Gets Nominated for Grammys Posted Thursday, January 4, 2001 by webmaster
Seems like the probably best in his business will get some fruits: With five nominations, West Coast superproducer Andre Young aka Dr. Dre leads the pack of contenders for the 43rd Annual Grammy Awards together with Destiny's Child's Beyoncé who also was nominated five times.

"It's such an honor for us to be nominated for four awards, it definitely lets us know that nothing has stopped us. We're just even more successful. And people are appreciating our hard work." These are the words of Beyoncé who seems to be quite happy with that. Dr. Dre, well, that's just what we all expected and what he deserves!

Eminem, R&B singer Joe, and other have four nominations each, Eminem's "The Marshall Mathers LP" is among the nominees for Album of the Year. By the way, Grammys and Eminem are a special and delicate combination anyway: On "The Real Slim Shady", Eminem let us know: "You think I give a damn about a Grammy?/ Half of you critics can't even stomach me, let alone stand me." And in consequence, he didn't appear last year to claim his awards...

Dre Calls NWA Album Off Posted Monday, December 11, 2000 by webmaster
Pioneering hip-hop group N.W.A have shelved plans to release a reunion album anytime soon, after early sessions for the LP yielded disappointing results, Dr. Dre said Thursday.

"We got a couple things down, nothing that I'm happy with, so they don't mean anything," the superstar producer and rapper said.

The group was unable to continue working on an N.W.A album, because its members were all due on other projects, Dre said.

"The status of N.W.A right now remains in limbo, because everybody that's supposed to be a part of this record has their own careers, and they're out doing their things. [Ice] Cube is working on a big special-effect movie, Snoop [Dogg] has a record coming out and is gonna promote that, and I'm working with my new artists, trying to do my thing. I have no idea when that record's gonna happen, or if it's gonna happen."

Dre, Cube and M.C. Ren are holdovers from the original N.W.A lineup, while Snoop Dogg was subbing for the late MC Eazy-E, who died in 1995 of complications from AIDS. The revamped group made its debut at a Farmclub.com taping in March.

Founded in 1986, N.W.A provided a template for gangsta rap with 1989's Straight Outta Compton. The group fell apart when Dre left for a solo career in 1992.

With this incarnation of N.W.A sidelined, Dre is busy working on new projects for his Aftermath label, having recently signed hip-hop vet Rakim, as well as newcomer Shari Watson, who calls herself Truth Hurts. Dre is helping the St. Louis songstress ready her debut album, Ain't That the Truth?

"I've been looking for a female singer for about eight years now, and I finally found [her]," Dre said. "We've been working really hard to make her stuff come out proper, and we're gonna change the course of music again. I can't even call it R&B, cause R&B is rap's bitch. It's some other sh--. It's somethin' else. It's singing to my rhythm, and it's definitely gonna make everybody that's out there doing R&B music go back in the studio and rethink and do their sh-- over — press erase."

Dre said he's equally excited about Rakim's Aftermath debut, which they'll likely begin work on in January. The LP will be called Oh My God.

"I've always been a fan of Rakim; I've always bought every record twice," Dre said. "He's been one of the reasons why I'm still in hip-hop today. So for me to be able to work with him is a straight-up blessing. I'm just grateful. I'm gonna step into the studio and make this the best record that I've ever made."

Dre celebrated the upcoming DVD/VHS release of "Up in Smoke: the Concert Film" (Dec. 19) at a party in Santa Monica, California, on Thursday night. The film features live footage from the summer's Up in Smoke Tour, which featured Dre, Cube, Snoop and Eminem, among others.

"A lot of people were saying we'd do one or two shows until the violence comes in and shuts it down," Dre said. "We kept it well-organized and professional, and at the end we proved everybody wrong. I think that was a big accomplishment for hip-hop, because it was no more, no less than a hip-hop show. That's all we set our minds to do — do straight-up, hardcore hip-hop, sell out arenas and keep it peaceful. That's a very difficult thing to do, and we pulled it off."

Dr. Dre to Produce Eve Posted Monday, December 4, 2000 by webmaster
Dr Dre is set to produce a number of tracks on the forthcoming new album by Ruff Ryders' pit bull lady in a skirt : EVE.
Initially, Dre was supposed to produce only one track but there's been so much chemistry between them that they have now decided to head back to the studio in LA in the coming week to work on further sessions.
It is unclear exactly how much of the final album will be made up of Dre-produced tracks as fellow Ruff Ryder Swizz Beatz is supposed to have produced the bulk of tracks already recorded.
The Dre/Eve twinning has been a long time coming. Several years ago, Eve presented Dre with her first demo and the star was so impressed he attempted, unsuccessfully, to sign her to his Aftermath label.
